Chapter 9 - The Signature

The signing took place in a small conference room at the county courthouse.

The atmosphere was arctic. Denise sat on one side of the long mahogany table, surrounded by her solemn-looking attorney. Her face was pale, devoid of any makeup, and she wore a plain dark sweater—a stark contrast to the flamboyant emerald suit she had worn at graduation.

Across from her sat Joanna, Simon, and Attorney Marcus Vance.

No one spoke as Marcus laid the legal documents in front of Denise.

"Before you sign, Ms. Miller," Marcus said in a crisp, professional tone, "I want to make sure you understand the terms completely. By signing this document, you are voluntarily surrendering any parental rights you may have claimed over Simon. You are dropping all civil claims against Joanna Miller. And in exchange, my client agrees not to pursue back-pay child support or forward the tax audit documentation to federal prosecutors."

Denise’s lawyer leaned over and whispered into her ear. "Sign it, Denise. If this goes to trial, you will be financially ruined and potentially facing criminal indictment. Sign it."

Denise picked up the pen. Her hand shook so violently she could barely hold it. She looked across the table at Simon, her eyes desperate.

"Simon..." Denise whispered, her voice cracking. "I’m your mother... I gave you life... doesn't that mean anything to you?"

Simon looked at her with neither anger nor pity. His expression was completely neutral, like staring at a stranger on a bus.

"You gave me biological life, Denise," Simon said calmly. "Joanna gave me a home, a conscience, an education, and a heart. Life isn't just breathing. It’s staying when things get hard. You left."

A tear slipped down Denise’s cheek, ruining her composure. She lowered her head and signed her name on the dotted line on three separate copies of the document.

When she finished, she pushed the pen away, slid the papers across the table, and buried her face in her hands, sobbing quietly.

Joanna signed her portion, followed by Simon.

As Marcus gathered the signed documents into her leather briefcase, Denise looked up, her eyes rimmed with red. "Are you happy now, Joanna? You took my son. You took my family. You took everything."

Joanna stood up, placing her hand gently on Simon's shoulder.

"I didn't take anything from you, Denise," Joanna said softly, her voice filled with a deep, quiet peace. "You dropped a precious gift on a doorstep nineteen years ago because you thought it was too heavy to carry. I just picked it up and held it tight. You can't blame me for loving what you threw away."

Without waiting for a response, Joanna, Simon, and Marcus turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving Denise alone with her attorney in the quiet, sterile room.
