Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Over the next three days, Evelyn moved with the stealth of a ghost. She visited her bank, moving her hard-earned deployment pay and savings into a private account David couldn't touch. She also contacted a private investigator, a retired military intelligence officer named Clara, to dig into David’s dental practice.
What Clara found was a goldmine of leverage.
"David’s dental clinic has been struggling," Clara explained over a secure call, sending files to Evelyn's laptop. "He’s been skimming from the employee retirement fund to pay for Chloe’s luxury apartment lease. Not only that, but he’s been billing insurance companies for procedures he never performed to keep his head above water. It’s textbook insurance fraud, Evelyn."
Evelyn stared at the financial ledgers on her screen. "Does Chloe know?"
"Know? She’s the receptionist who handles the billing. She’s complicit. Her signature is on half of these falsified claims."
Evelyn closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. David hadn't just betrayed her; he had compromised his entire life's work, dragging his mistress into a federal crime. And they had dared to lock her daughter out in the cold to protect this fragile, illegal house of cards.
"Save everything, Clara. Back it up on three secure drives. Send one to Sarah, keep one, and give one to me."
Meanwhile, Evelyn spent every waking moment restoring Lily's sense of safety. They decorated Marcus’s small apartment with paper snowflakes. They baked cookies, and for the first time in days, Evelyn heard her daughter laugh. But every time Lily saw a commercial with a Christmas tree, she would instinctively reach for Evelyn’s hand, checking to see if she was still there.
"Mommy," Lily asked one evening as they watched a movie, "are we ever going back to our house?"
Evelyn rubbed her daughter's back, her heart aching with a mixture of love and fury. "We are going back, sweetie. Very soon. And nobody is ever going to make you stand in the cold again. I promise."

"What about Daddy?"
"Daddy has to face the consequences of his choices," Evelyn said gently. "And Mommy is going to make sure he does."
