Chapter 4 - The Ambush

December 20th. The lobby of Vance Family Dental was bustling with patients trying to get their last-minute cleanings before the holidays. Chloe sat behind the reception desk, wearing a festive red sweater, smiling brightly as she checked in a patient.
The glass double doors swung open, and Evelyn stepped inside. She was dressed in her full Army Service Uniform—crisp, decorated with medals of valor, her combat boots polished to a mirror shine. Beside her walked Sarah Jenkins, holding a thick stack of legal documents, and two county sheriff's deputies.
The room went dead silent.
Chloe’s smile froze. She looked at Evelyn’s uniform, then at the deputies, her face turning pale. "Can... can I help you?"
"I’m looking for my husband," Evelyn said, her voice ringing clearly through the quiet lobby. "Or should I say, your boss?"
Before Chloe could answer, the door to the inner offices opened, and David walked out, holding a patient’s chart. "Chloe, did we get the authorization for—"
He stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes widened, his face draining of all color as he stared at Evelyn. "Evelyn? What... what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be back until January!"
"Surprise," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with ice.
"Evelyn, let's go to my office, please," David stammered, looking nervously at the patients staring from the waiting room. "We can talk about this privately."
"No, David. We are doing this right here," Sarah Jenkins stepped forward, handing a thick manila envelope to David and another to Chloe. "David Vance, you are officially served with divorce papers, a temporary restraining order barring you from contacting your daughter, Lily, and an emergency motion for sole custody."
"What?!" David gasped, clutching the envelope. "You can't do this! You can't just bar me from my daughter!"
"You locked your seven-year-old daughter on a freezing porch in twenty-degree weather while you were inside with your mistress," Evelyn said, her voice carrying to every single person in the room. Several patients gasped; one woman shook her head in disgust. "I have the medical records of her hypothermia. I have the video of you and Chloe inside."
Chloe stood up, her voice trembling. "This is a lie! This is harassment!"
Sarah Jenkins turned her sharp gaze to Chloe. "Miss Miller, you are also being served with an immediate eviction notice from 142 Woodside Lane. You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises, which belong solely to my client. Furthermore, both of you are being served with a civil summons regarding the misappropriation of dental clinic funds and systematic insurance fraud."
David looked as if he might faint. "Insurance fraud? What are you talking about?"
"We have the ledgers, David," Evelyn said, stepping closer. "Every fake crown, every falsified root canal, and every dollar you stole from your employees' retirement fund to buy Chloe’s jewelry. The state dental board and the federal insurance investigators have already been notified. Their representatives will be here by the end of the day."
David dropped his chart. It clattered to the floor, papers scattering everywhere. "Evelyn, please... we can talk about this. I made a mistake. I was lonely..."
May you like
"You weren't lonely when you let my daughter freeze," Evelyn said, her eyes flashing with a terrifying intensity. "You are done, David. Pack your bags. You have until tonight to get your things out of my house. If you or Chloe are anywhere near my property by sunset, the deputies will arrest you for trespassing."
She turned on her heel, her cape swirling, and walked out of the clinic, leaving behind a chaotic silence that would soon destroy David’s world.
