Chapter 6 - A Warm Christmas

On Christmas Eve, the house on Woodside Lane was quiet, clean, and completely restored. The scent of bleach and lavender had replaced the lingering traces of the past year.
In the living room stood a new, smaller tree, decorated not with elegant, expensive glass, but with mismatched, colorful ornaments that Lily had made in school over the years. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting a warm, safe glow across the room.
Marcus had left an hour ago to spend the holiday with his own family, leaving Evelyn and Lily alone in their home.
Lily sat on the plush rug, her lap filled with wrapping paper from the presents she had just opened. Barnaby the teddy bear sat beside her, wearing a little red Santa hat. She looked up at Evelyn, her cheeks rosy from the warmth of the fire, her eyes bright and filled with joy.
"Mommy?" Lily asked, holding up a new drawing kit Evelyn had bought her.
"Yes, baby?"
"Is the bad dream over?"
Evelyn sat down on the floor beside her daughter, pulling her close. She wrapped her arms around Lily, feeling the steady, warm rise and fall of her chest.
"The bad dream is completely over, Lily," Evelyn said softly, kissing the top of her head. "We are safe. This is our home, and nobody is ever going to take it away from us again."
Lily smiled, leaning her head against Evelyn’s shoulder. "I like our new tree better."

"Me too, baby. Me too."
Outside, the snow fell gently against the windowpane, a soft white blanket quietening the world. But inside, the house was warm, filled with the promise of a peaceful future, and the unbreakable bond of a mother who had fought a war to bring her daughter home.
