Chapter 10 - Reckoning

Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing took place at the New York State Supreme Court.

The courthouse hallway was packed with reporters. News of the "Huntington Heir Financial Fraud" had broken nationwide. Headlines read: "Fake Millionaire Husband Steals $14M From Secret Billionaire Heiress."

Hayden was led into the courtroom in handcuffs, wearing an orange jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his eyes hollowed out by days in detention. Gone was the arrogant, polished man who used to yell at me over twenty-dollar grocery receipts.

Beside him sat his mother, Brenda, and his sister, Chloe, both named as co-defendants in the civil and criminal suits.

When Hayden saw me walk into the courtroom, his eyes lit up with frantic hope.

I wasn't wearing faded thrift-store clothes anymore.

I wore a sharply tailored navy silk suit, my hair styled impeccably, wearing my mother's heirloom diamond ring. I walked with my head high, flanked by Grandma Margaret and an army of eight corporate attorneys.

During the hearing, Hayden’s defense lawyer tried to plead for a settlement. "Your Honor, my client wishes to resolve this matter out of court. He is willing to sign a full divorce decree and waive all parental rights to the child in exchange for dropping criminal charges."

My attorney, Marcus Sterling, stood up slowly.

"Your Honor," Marcus said smoothly, "we reject any settlement offer. The defendant did not merely breach a marriage contract; he executed a pre-meditated criminal enterprise involving forgery, bank fraud, and psychological abuse over a four-year period. The Huntington Estate seeks maximum sentencing."

The judge looked down at the financial evidence mountain sitting on her bench, then looked at Hayden with complete disgust.

"Bail is denied," the judge declared, slamming her gavel. "The trial date for grand larceny and wire fraud is set for next month."

Hayden panicked. He lunged forward against the defense table, screaming toward my gallery row.

"Matilda! Please! Look at me!" he sobbed, tears streaming down his face as guards tackled him back into his seat. "I loved you! I was just stupid! Don't do this to me! MATILDA!"

I didn't even blink. I turned my head, met his terrified eyes for one cold second, and looked away.
