Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

I was in London, walking through the glass-walled offices of my new firm, when I received an unexpected visitor. It was Marcus, my former assistant from back home—the only person who had ever seen how much I actually worked.

He had quit a few months after I left, and he had reached out through professional channels. We met for coffee at a quiet spot overlooking the Thames.

"I saw what happened," Marcus said, his eyes filled with genuine concern. "I also saw what they were saying about you in the local town forums. After you left, Dylan started a smear campaign. He told everyone you were fired, that you stole money from the family, that you were 'unstable.'"

I felt a flash of cold anger, but it was quickly replaced by a sense of detachment. "Let them talk, Marcus. It doesn't change my reality."

"It does," he countered, sliding a thick envelope across the table. "I kept records. Emails, texts, logs of how much money you funneled into that house, and transcripts of conversations where your mother openly admitted she was using you. I also found out they were trying to ruin your professional reputation with your previous contacts. I have all the proof you need to legally silence them forever."

I stared at the envelope. This wasn't just revenge; it was documentation. It was the truth, codified and ready to be used as a weapon against the lies that had defined my decade of service. With this, I could ensure they never spoke my name again, and if they did, the legal consequences would be catastrophic.
