Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The confrontation happened in a cold, sterile meeting room in a law office back in the States. I had flown back for a brief, calculated trip. I didn't meet them in a coffee shop or a park. I met them under the watch of my legal team.
When Dylan and Sarah walked in, they looked older. The lack of luxury had etched itself onto their faces. Dylan was wearing a suit that was two sizes too big, and Sarah looked fragile, stripped of the manicured aesthetic I had funded for years.
"Rebecca," Sarah started, her voice trembling. "We are family. How could you let this happen to us?"
I didn't answer. I gestured for my lawyer to open the folder.
"We aren't here for a family reunion," my lawyer said, his voice crisp. "We are here to present you with a cease-and-desist order, backed by the evidence of your harassment and libel. We also have proof that you have been attempting to contact the victim’s employer to cause professional harm."
Dylan tried to stand up, his face turning a blotchy red. "Victim? She's the one who destroyed our lives! She’s the one who cut off the money!"
"I cut off the payments because I owed you nothing," I said, finally speaking. My voice was low, calm, and terrifyingly steady.
The silence that followed was heavy. I looked directly at Dylan—not with hate, but with pity.

"You called me a parasite, Dylan. You told me I would be nothing without you. Look around. I am the architect of my life. You are a man who can’t pay for his own groceries. You didn't lose your 'support system.' You lost your servant. And you are never, ever getting her back."
Dylan looked at his mother, then at the lawyers, then back at me. He realized, with a sudden, sinking clarity, that there was no "winning" this. I wasn't there to be gaslit; I was there to bury the narrative he had spent a lifetime building.
