Chapter 5 - The Unearthing of the Medical Fraud

By midnight, the grand Beverly Hills mansion was dead silent.
The caterers had cleared out, the guests had long vanished, and Brandon, Deborah, and Tiffany had been escorted off the estate by the police, taking nothing more than a couple of hastily packed suitcases.
I sat alone in the vast, high-ceilinged living room, wrapped in a plush cashmere throw, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea. The silence wasn't lonely; it was liberating. For the first time in ten years, I could breathe without feeling an oppressive weight on my chest.
Arthur Vance walked in from the study, setting a thick blue binder on the coffee table in front of me.
"The preliminary audit is complete, Sabrina," Arthur said, taking a seat across from me. "And we found something even more sinister than the hidden bank accounts."
I set my teacup down, frowning. "What do you mean?"
Arthur opened the binder, flipping to a section filled with medical charts, lab printouts, and bank transfer records spanning the last eight years.
"When you asked me to investigate Brandon’s fertility records, I noticed a discrepancy in your medical history," Arthur explained, his tone serious and dark. "You told me that eight years ago, you underwent a comprehensive reproductive surgery at St. Jude's Private Clinic, after which Dr. Robert Miller told you that your fallopian tubes were blocked and that you would never conceive."
"Yes," I remembered, a sudden chill running down my spine. "I was devastated. Brandon took me to the clinic. Dr. Miller was his family’s personal physician."
Arthur pushed a document toward me. It was a bank transaction statement showing a series of heavy wire transfers—totalling three hundred thousand dollars—from Brandon’s personal shell company directly to Dr. Robert Miller’s private offshore account in 2018.
"I had my medical investigator pull the actual surgical tapes and internal pathology reports from St. Jude’s," Arthur said softly. "Sabrina... you were never sterile. You never had blocked tubes."
My heart stopped beating for a full second. I stared at Arthur, my hand hovering over the paper. "What?"
"Dr. Miller was bribed by Brandon," Arthur revealed, his voice filled with quiet outrage. "Brandon knew even back then that he had a low sperm count, though he didn't realize it was total azoospermia at the time. He was terrified that if the truth came out, his traditional, arrogant mother would disinherit him, and his social standing would be ruined. So he paid Dr. Miller to perform a mock procedure, lie to you, and issue a false medical report declaring you barren."
Tears, hot and sudden, filled my eyes. Not tears of sadness, but of pure, incandescent fury.
Eight years.
For eight years, I had blamed myself. I had cried myself to sleep hundreds of nights, believing my body was broken. I had endured Deborah’s cruel insults, Brandon’s drunken tirades, and the pitying glances of society, all because I believed I was failing as a woman.
And it was all a orchestrated, calculated lie constructed by the man who swore to protect me.
"Where is Dr. Miller now?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.
"He retired to Santa Barbara three years ago," Arthur replied. "But the California Medical Board has already been served with our affidavit. His license will be revoked by morning, and the District Attorney is adding criminal conspiracy and medical malpractice charges to Brandon's indictment."
I closed the binder, resting my hands on its cover.
"They didn't just try to steal my money, Arthur," I whispered, looking out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the city lights below. "They tried to steal my humanity."
"They failed," Arthur said gently. "Because tomorrow morning, you go to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. I’ve arranged an appointment with Dr. Elena Rostova, the top reproductive specialist in the country. She has reviewed your actual, uncorrupted medical files. She confirmed that you are completely, perfectly healthy."
I closed my eyes, letting a single tear slip down my cheek.
I wasn't broken. I had never been broken.
"Thank you, Arthur," I whispered. "What's the next step?"
"The next step," Arthur smiled grimly, "is the liquidation of Keller Enterprises. Brandon’s board of directors is holding an emergency meeting at nine tomorrow morning to strip him of his CEO position. And as the primary creditor holding his seized assets... you own thirty-five percent of his company's voting shares."

I looked up at Arthur, a slow, cold smile spreading across my lips.
"Then I suppose I shouldn't be late for my board meeting."
