Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

By Friday evening, the clinic had closed its doors for the weekend, and the halls were empty and quiet.
I walked out to my car in the parking lot, the crisp autumn air biting at my cheeks. The rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a vast, indigo sky blanketed in brilliant, glittering stars.
I unlocked my car door, threw my gym bag into the passenger seat, and paused for a moment before sliding behind the wheel. I looked back toward the lit windows of the hospital pediatric ward on the fourth floor.
I knew that healthcare wasn't just about setting bones, casting fractures, or filling out intake forms. It was about paying attention to the human stories hidden beneath the surface of medical charts—listening to the silences, watching the way a child flinches, and having the courage to press a panic button when the world around you tries to pretend everything is normal.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a text message from Detective Vance.
“Case officially closed. Federal judges signed off on all indictments. Enjoy your weekend, Marcus. You earned it.”
