Chapter 8 - The Industrial Secret
By Wednesday morning, the sun broke through the storm clouds, casting a bright, cold light over the Twin Cities.
The story was already breaking across local news channels and spreading like wildfire across social media platforms. Headlines blazed across screens: “Minneapolis Orthopedic Tech Uncovers Horrifying Child Captivity Plot After Finding Evidence Hidden Inside Patient's Cast.”
Thousands of comments poured in from outraged parents, medical professionals, and concerned citizens across the country, praising the quick thinking that saved a little girl from an unspeakable fate.
I sat at the nurses’ station in the pediatric ward of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, holding a cup of lukewarm coffee that tasted like cardboard, staring blankly at the wall mounted TV screen broadcasting the morning news report.
Detective Vance walked up behind me, sliding a thick manila envelope onto the counter.
“The lab finished processing that industrial metal piece we found in Lily’s cast,” Vance said, pulling up a stool and sitting down beside me.
“And?” I asked, turning to face her.
“And it ties David Miller directly to a federal embezzlement and insurance fraud ring operating out of three commercial demolition sites in the tri-state area,” Vance said, taking a sip of water. “David wasn't just a rogue criminal hiding a witness. He was working for a syndicate that intentionally burned down commercial buildings for insurance payouts. When Elena stumbled upon his ledger in their apartment building, he kidnapped her, locked her in that farmhouse, and tried to silence Lily by breaking her leg and using her as a human mule to smuggle out the primary piece of incriminating evidence from the site.”
“Insane,” I murmured, shaking my head. “To use an eight-year-old—six-year-old child as a vault for a piece of evidence... human beings are capable of things that defy comprehension.”
“Well, the syndicate’s leadership is currently being rounded up by the FBI as we speak,” Vance said, offering a faint, tired smile. “David Miller isn’t going to see daylight for the rest of his natural life.”

“She’s in intensive care, stable and recovering,” Vance said. “The doctors say she’s going to make a full physical recovery. And more importantly... she’s going to be reunited with Lily by this weekend.”
