Chapter 6 - Searching for Sarah

The flashbang went off with a concussive roar that rattled the windows of the rotting farmhouse.
Bang!
A brilliant flash of magnesium light illuminated the entire clearing, followed instantly by the deep, coordinated shouts of the tactical team surging through the front door.
“Police! Clear!”
“Clear the hallway!”
“Downstairs secure!”
I rushed in right behind Detective Vance, stepping over the splintered remains of the front door. The interior of the house was a disaster zone of absolute squalor—piles of empty beer cans, discarded fast-food wrappers, moldering cardboard boxes, and the overpowering stench of urine, damp wood, and cheap tobacco.
“Check the back rooms,” Vance barked, sweeping her service pistol back and forth as she cleared the living room.
I moved toward what looked like a makeshift kitchen. The counters were stacked high with dirty dishes and old pots, but something else caught my eye—something out of place amid the filth.
Resting neatly on a folded paper towel next to the sink was a clean, professional medical tray holding a roll of plaster casting tape, a basin of hardening plaster, and a pair of hospital-grade bandage shears.
“Sarah,” I called out, my voice tight. “Over here.”
Vance hurried into the kitchen, flashing her light across the counter. She nodded grimly. “He didn't just break her leg in a random attack. He set up an operating station right here in the kitchen. He cast her leg himself using stolen clinic supplies.”
“Look at this,” I said, pointing down at a small trash can beneath the sink.
Inside the bin, half-buried under empty soda cans, was a woman’s leather handbag.
Vance reached down with her gloved hand, lifted the bag out, and unzipped it. Inside was a cracked smartphone, a driver’s license bearing the name Elena Vance, and a small, silver locket engraved with the initials E.V.
Vance flipped the locket open with her thumb. Inside was a tiny photograph of Elena holding a newborn baby girl.
“She never left town,” Vance whispered, her voice dropping into a dark, solemn register. “She never abandoned her daughter. David had her trapped here the entire time.”

Before we could search the rest of the filthy kitchen, a sharp shout echoed from the back of the house.
“Officer down! Back room! I need a medic over here now!”
