Chapter 3 - Freezing the Empire

By 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, the lights in Alexander Sterling’s Manhattan penthouse office were blazing.

He hadn't slept. He had spent the entire night settling Lauren and Sophia in the master guest suite, calling family doctors to run emergency nutritional and pediatric evaluations, and locking down every single financial asset he owned.

Lauren was sleeping soundly for the first time in three years, with Sophia curled safely beside her in a bed with clean, crisp sheets.

Alexander sat behind his walnut desk, staring at the glowing monitor of his terminal. His private wealth manager and corporate legal counsel, Marcus Vance, sat across from him, looking pale and sweating despite the air conditioning.

“Mr. Sterling… are you entirely certain about this?” Marcus asked, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Freezing the primary Sterling Family Trust will halt payroll for three subsidiaries, stall the downtown development project, and trigger an immediate injunction from your mother’s legal team.”

“Let them file their injunction,” Alexander said quietly. He didn't look up from his screen. “I want every single account associated with Victoria Sterling, Sterling Holdings, and V.S. Consulting frozen effective immediately. I want forensic accountants combing through every transaction made over the last thirty-six months. Every wire transfer, every shell corporation, every property purchase.”

“Sir, your mother is the chairwoman emeritus,” Marcus reminded him nervously. “If we initiate a forensic audit without prior board approval—”

“I am the majority shareholder,” Alexander cut him off, his voice dropping an octave. He raised his eyes, and the look he gave Marcus made the veteran lawyer swallow hard. “My mother embezzled funds intended for the support of my minor child. She committed wire fraud, forgery, and extortion. If you aren't willing to sign the freeze orders, Marcus, I will call the U.S. Attorney’s office directly and let them handle the paperwork. Which do you prefer?”

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled a gold-plated pen from his breast pocket. “Consider it done, Mr. Sterling. The accounts are locked. By 9:00 a.m., the banks will reject every transaction bearing Mrs. Sterling’s signature.”

“Good.” Alexander leaned back in his leather chair, watching the sunrise paint the Manhattan skyline in shades of bruised orange and steel grey. “Now, bring up the records for the Long Island estate.”

“The Long Island estate?”

“My mother’s primary residence,” Alexander said coldly. “The house she bought three years ago—around the exact same time Lauren and Sophia were forced into that Bronx basement. I want to know whose name is on the deed.”

Marcus clicked rapidly on his keyboard, pulling up public registry files and property deeds. His fingers slowed down. He stopped typing altogether.

“Well?” Alexander prompted.

“Mr. Sterling… the Long Island estate isn’t owned by the family trust,” Marcus said carefully, staring at the screen. “It’s registered under an offshore LLC based in the British Virgin Islands. And the sole beneficiary of that LLC… is Victoria Sterling’s private Swiss account.”

Alexander stood up. The chair rolled backward, hitting the mahogany bookcase with a dull thud.

His mother hadn't just hoarded the money; she had built a fortress out of stolen child support, luxury cars, and fraudulent real estate while his daughter ate from hotel garbage cans.

“Call Arthur,” Alexander instructed, walking toward the private elevator.

“Where are you going, sir?”

“To Long Island,” Alexander said, his knuckles whitening as he grabbed his coat. “It’s time to inspect the family legacy.”
