Chapter 9 - The First Real Meal
One year after the night at the Grand Plaza Hotel ballroom, the Sterling family celebrated a very different kind of anniversary.
There were no crystal chandeliers, no string orchestras playing background music for rich strangers, and no cameras flashing by front doors.
Instead, the dining table in the penthouse was covered in a checkered tablecloth. Piled high in the center was a mountain of homemade fried chicken, a warm bowl of mashed potatoes, and a fresh blackberry cobbler bubbling with sweet, sticky syrup.
Sophia, now nine years old and wearing a bright yellow dress without a single stain of hunger or neglect on her, stood proudly at the head of the table holding a serving spoon.
“Everyone take a seat!” she announced, mimicking the stern tone of a schoolteacher. “Grandpa Arthur, stop talking to Daddy and wash your hands!”
Arthur laughed heartily, holding up his hands in mock surrender. “Yes, Chef Sophia! Right away!”
Lauren sat beside Alexander, passing plates around the table while the autumn sunlight streamed through the tall windows, warming the room in a golden glow.
Alexander raised his glass of sparkling cider, looking around the table at the people who mattered most—his wife, his daughter, and the loyal old friend who had risked everything to tell the truth.
“To new beginnings,” Alexander said softly, his eyes meeting Lauren’s. “And to never taking a single day of warmth for granted.”
“To truth,” Arthur added, raising his glass in agreement.
“And to blackberry cobbler!” Sophia cheered, holding up her plastic cup of apple juice.

Everyone laughed, clinking their glasses together in a bright, ringing chorus that echoed through the penthouse—a sound so full of life and joy that it banished every lingering ghost of the past.
They ate until they were full, sharing stories, laughing at Arthur’s terrible jokes, and watching the sun dip slowly below the Manhattan skyline, painting the clouds in shades of brilliant gold and violet.
