Chapter 5 - The Frozen Docks

The North Atlantic port was a desolate, freezing maze of towering steel shipping containers, rusted cranes, and icy concrete piers. The wind off the ocean blew with brutal force, carrying spray that instantly froze into slick sheets across the ground.
At Berth 14, three heavy black SUVs were parked in a semicircle around a massive crimson shipping container.
A dozen men in heavy tactical gear, armed with submachine guns, stood guard around the perimeter. In the center of the yard, two engineers in silver heat-resistant suits were setting up high-powered plasma torches, their bright blue arcs spitting showers of orange sparks against the thick titanium lock-casing of the container.
Standing near the edge of the pier, wrapped in a long black fur-collared coat, was Dimitri Vance.
He was thirty-four years old, tall, lean, with pale skin and strikingly pale yellow-hazel eyes that gave him a predatory, reptilian look. He held a silver flask in one gloved hand, watching the blue plasma flame bite into the metal with cold impatience.
"Faster!" Dimitri barked over the howl of the wind. "I don't pay you by the hour to burn fuel! Cut that damn door open!"
"Mr. Vance, this metal is three-inch hardened titanium!" the head engineer shouted back over the roar of the torch. "If we rush the thermal output, we risk incinerating whatever is inside the vault!"
Dimitri sneered, taking a sip from his flask. "Just get it open before the—"
He stopped.
A sudden, heavy rumble echoed across the concrete pier—the unmistakable sound of multiple high-horsepower engines approaching at speed.
Dimitri spun around, his hand instinctively dropping to the custom pearl-handled revolver at his belt.
From between the towering rows of blue and green shipping containers, four matte-black armored SUVs roared into the yard. They didn't slow down. They executed a precision tactical maneuver, sliding across the slick ice and forming an impenetrable iron wall fifty feet from Dimitri's position, completely blocking the exit path.
The tactical guards raised their submachine guns, aiming at the black vehicles.
"Hold your fire!" Dimitri commanded, a dark, wicked smile slowly spreading across his narrow face. "Let's see who has come to crash my party."
The driver’s door of the lead SUV opened, and Frank stepped out, carrying an automatic shotgun across his chest, followed by ten heavily armed Christa syndicate enforcers who took up defensive positions behind the armored vehicles.
Then, the rear door of the main SUV swung open.
Alfred Christa stepped out onto the frozen concrete.
He wore no body armor, no tactical gear—only his tailored charcoal suit and a heavy black cashmere coat draped over his shoulders. His face was a mask of cold, absolute authority that seemed to freeze the very air around him.
Beside him stepped Sienna, her small hand firmly held in his.
Andtrotting directly beside the girl was Bruno, his broad head low, his dark eyes locked onto Dimitri with a terrifying, primal hatred.
Dimitri Vance’s yellow eyes widened in genuine, shocking surprise. The color drained from his pale face for a fraction of a second before he caught himself.
"Well, well, well," Dimitri purred, stepping forward, his voice dripping with false warmth. "Alfred Christa. The great ghost of the North Side comes out into the cold. And... what is this? You've picked up a stray."
Alfred didn't answer immediately. He walked forward slowly, stopping twenty feet from Dimitri. Sienna stayed right at his side, her small boots crunching on the snow, holding onto the brass key hidden beneath her sweater.
"You're standing on my docks, Dimitri," Alfred said softly. His voice carried effortlessly over the ocean wind.
Dimitri chuckled, gesturing toward the crimson container. "Your docks? Check the registry, old man. As of yesterday, all Petrova assets belong to the Vance Syndicate. Nikolai died without an heir. Everything he owned reverts to his primary creditor—me."
"Nikolai didn't die without an heir," Alfred stated coldly.
He looked down at Sienna.
Dimitri’s eyes dropped to the child. His pupils narrowed into tiny slits as he recognized the dark hair and the fierce, defiant set of her jaw.
"Sienna Petrova," Dimitri whispered, his tone turning viciously cold. "I was told the rat died in the fire."
Bruno let out a deep, vibrating growl that rattled through the icy air, his top lip curling back to reveal sharp, gleaming white teeth.
"She survived," Alfred said, stepping slightly in front of the child. "And as long as she breathes, every port, every ship, and every dollar owned by Nikolai Petrova belongs exclusively to her. Under the laws of the council, you are a trespasser."
Dimitri's smile vanished completely. He snapped his fingers, and his twelve tactical guards immediately racked the slides of their weapons, pointing them directly at Alfred and the child.
"The council is twenty miles away, Alfred!" Dimitri sneered, his voice rising in anger. "And you brought a child and a dog to a gunfight! Give me the girl and the key, or I will leave your bodies to rot in the harbor with her father!"
Alfred didn't flinch. He didn't look at the guns pointed at his chest.
Instead, he reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a small black leather glove, and slowly drew it over his right hand—covering the tattoo of the lion.
"Dimitri," Alfred said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the enforcers behind him hold their breath. "You are young. You think power comes from guns and noise."
Alfred lifted his left hand, flicking two fingers toward the sky.
Instantly, from the tops of the surrounding shipping containers twenty feet above them, red laser targeting dots materialized through the sea fog.
Dozens of them.
Red dots danced across the foreheads, chests, and throats of every single one of Dimitri's twelve guards. High above on the crane gantries, Alfred’s elite marksmen sat silently, their rifles locked onto their targets.

Dimitri’s guards froze, their faces turning ghost-white as they realized they were completely surrounded and utterly outmatched.
"Drop your weapons," Alfred ordered softly. "Or my men will paint this ice with your blood before you can pull a single trigger."
