Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The news broke across the city's underground channels before sunset like a seismic shockwave.
Within two hours of Container 09 being opened, Alfred’s intelligence network released a targeted fraction of the records contained within Nikolai Petrova's mahogany box to the syndicate council.
By 5:00 PM, every major family boss in the state had revoked their recognition of the Vance Syndicate. Dimitri Vance's accounts were frozen, his shipping access was revoked, and his own lieutenants, recognizing a sinking ship, began abandoning him in droves.
Dimitri fled to his heavily fortified compound in the West Hills—a massive concrete villa surrounded by ten-foot security walls and armed guards. He barricaded himself inside his private office, drinking heavily, waiting for the inevitable strike.
He thought he had time. He thought his security walls and twenty loyal enforcers could buy him a negotiation with the council.
He was wrong.
At 9:00 PM, the storm returned to the city, dumping another four inches of fresh snow over the West Hills.
Outside the gates of the Vance compound, three black SUVs sat idling in the dark road.
Inside the center vehicle, Alfred Christa sat quietly, checking the action on a heavy silver semi-automatic pistol.
Beside him sat Frank, who turned from the front seat holding a tactical tablet.
"Power grid is down, Boss," Frank reported. "We jammed their comms three minutes ago. They have no outside line, no backup generators, and three of Vance’s outer guards just deserted their posts."
Alfred racked the slide of his pistol, slipping it into his shoulder holster. "Leave no open threads, Frank. Anyone who raised a gun against Nikolai's family stays in that house."
"Understood, Boss."
"What about the child?" Frank asked, looking back. "Is she secure?"
"She is at the Mercer Street penthouse with Mrs. Gable, Marcus, and twenty armed men," Alfred said. "And the dog is guarding her door."
Alfred opened the SUV door, stepping out into the howling wind and deep snow.
Behind him, fifteen of the Christa family’s elite enforcers stepped into the night, armed with silenced rifles and breaching gear.
They didn't use explosives to blow the gate. They didn't need to.
Frank applied a high-frequency electronic bypass to the main gate's hydraulic lock. With a soft click, the heavy iron gates swung open, allowing the shadows to slide into the courtyard unnoticed.
The assault was surgical, swift, and absolute.
Within seven minutes, the outer guards were neutralized without a single alarm being raised. The Christa enforcers swept through the marble corridors of the villa like a cold wind, clearing room after room with lethal precision.
Alfred walked through the front doors of the mansion, stepping over the fallen guards, his long black coat trailing behind him. He didn't fire a single shot. He walked with the slow, measured pace of a monarch inspecting a fallen kingdom.
He reached the heavy oak doors of the master study on the second floor.
Inside, he could hear furniture being dragged across the floor, glass breaking, and the frantic, hysterical weeping of a man who realized he had run out of road.
Alfred raised his heavy leather boot and kicked the center of the oak doors once.
The heavy brass lock sheared off, and the double doors burst inward with a deafening crash.
Dimitri Vance was crouching behind a overturned leather sofa, holding an assault rifle with trembling hands. His hair was disheveled, his clothes stained with liquor, his pale yellow eyes wild with pure, unadulterated terror.
He raised the rifle, aiming frantically at the doorway. "STAY BACK! I'LL KILL YOU ALL! I HAVE MILLIONS! I CAN PAY YOU!"
Alfred walked into the room alone.
He didn't draw his gun. He simply kept his hands in his coat pockets, stepping around the broken glass, his boots leaving dark, melting snow tracks on the white Persian rug.
"You died the moment you put a child in an alley, Dimitri," Alfred said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Dimitri pulled the trigger.
CLICK.
The chamber was empty. In his panic, he had forgotten to load a fresh magazine.
Dimitri let out a pathetic, high-pitched scream, dropping the rifle and reaching for a broken bottle on the floor.
Before he could lift it, Frank stepped up behind him, grabbing him by his collar and slamming him down onto his knees in the center of the room.
Dimitri wept openly, blood dripping from his nose, looking up at Alfred with desperate, begging eyes.
"Please... Alfred... please!" Dimitri sobbed, his voice cracking. "It was business! Just business! Nikolai wouldn't sell his ports... I had to do it! I'll leave the country! I'll give you everything! Just let me live!"
Alfred stood over him, looking down at the weeping man with an expression of profound disgust.
"You speak of business," Alfred whispered, pulling his silver pistol smoothly from his holster. "Nikolai Petrova was my brother. His daughter is my family."
Alfred pressed the cool steel barrel against the center of Dimitri’s forehead.
May you like
"And family is not business."
A single muffled shot echoed through the heavy room, cutting off the wind outside.
