Chapter 6 - The Unlocking

The silence on the pier was deafening, broken only by the howl of the ocean wind and the heavy, terrified breathing of Dimitri's enforcers.

One by one, realization setting in, the guards began dropping their submachine guns onto the frozen concrete with heavy, metallic clatters. They raised their hands, stepping slowly away from their weapons.

Dimitri Vance stood alone, his teeth gritted so tight his jaw muscles trembled. His yellow eyes darted frantically from the red laser dot dancing on his own chest to the unblinking grey eyes of Alfred Christa.

"You're insane, Christa," Dimitri spat, his voice shaking with pure rage. "You think you can start a syndicate war for a dead man's daughter?"

"I am not starting a war, Dimitri," Alfred replied smoothly, walking forward until he was standing five feet from the younger man. "I am ending a nuisance."

Alfred looked over at Frank. "Disarm them. Secure the perimeter."

Frank and his men moved in swiftly, kicking the dropped weapons into the ocean and forcing Dimitri’s guards to their knees with their hands behind their heads.

Dimitri stood frozen as Frank stepped up behind him, roughly yanking the pearl-handled revolver from his belt and tossing it onto the ice.

"Now," Alfred said, turning his back on Dimitri as if he were nothing more than a ghost. He crouched down to Sienna's eye level. "Sienna. Give me the key."

Sienna reached inside her cashmere sweater, unhooked the thick steel cord from around her neck, and handed the heavy brass key to Alfred.

Alfred took it gently. He stood up and walked over to the massive crimson shipping container.

The two engineers who had been operating the plasma torches were cowering near a stack of wooden pallets. Alfred ignored them. He stepped up to the massive titanium door, examining the lock mechanism.

In the center of the door was a heavy steel housing featuring a triple-notched keyhole beneath a reinforced slide plate.

Alfred inserted the brass key into the lock. It fit perfectly, smooth as silk.

He turned the key ninety degrees to the left—a deep, mechanical CLICK echoed through the heavy steel door. Then he turned it one hundred and eighty degrees to the right—a second, deeper THUD sounded as heavy internal locking bars retracted.

Finally, Alfred pressed his thumb against a small copper pad located on the bow of the key itself.

A soft green LED light illuminated around the handle. A quiet electronic chime beeped, followed by the heavy, hydraulic hiss of depressurizing seals.

The massive titanium doors of Container 09 swung slowly open.

Inside, illuminated by bright interior overhead strips, was not a shipment of contraband or stacks of cash.

It was a state-of-the-art mobile command vault.

The interior walls were lined with server racks hummed softly, storing cold-data drives containing decades of encrypted records. In the center of the room stood a heavy steel table. Sitting on that table was a mahogany box bound in brass, alongside a leather-bound journal bearing Nikolai Petrova’s personal wax seal.

And beside the box sat a high-definition video monitor that automatically flickered to life the moment the door was opened.

A face appeared on the screen—a distinguished man with thick grey hair, warm brown eyes, and a majestic beard.

Nikolai Petrova.

Sienna let out a sharp gasp, her hands going to her mouth. "Daddy..."

Bruno rushed into the container, whining softly as he pressed his nose against the glass screen, his tail thumping against the floor.

The recorded video began to play, Nikolai's rich, recorded voice filling the small metallic room.

"If you are watching this video," the recording began, "it means my home has fallen, and I am no longer among the living."

The recording paused, Nikolai’s digital eyes seeming to look straight through the camera lens.

"To whoever opened this vault... if you broke these locks by force, know that a secondary trigger has already wiped every server in this room, leaving you with nothing. But if this vault was opened by the key I gave my daughter... then you are standing beside Alfred Christa."

On the video, Nikolai offered a faint, sad smile.

"Alfred, my old brother. If you are reading this, my sweet Sienna is safe with you. I leave her entire inheritance—every port, every account, every ship—in your care as her legal guardian until she comes of age."

Nikolai’s expression turned deadly serious on the screen.

"And to Dimitri Vance... who I know sought to destroy my family... the mahogany box on the table contains the complete financial records of your illegal weapons trade with the offshore cartels. It contains every bribe you paid, every order you signed, and the exact coordinates of your hidden offshore accounts."

Nikolai’s voice echoed like a thunderclap from beyond the grave:

"Alfred... use it to tear his world down to the ashes."

The screen flickered black.

Inside the container, the silence was absolute.

Alfred stepped over to the steel table, picked up the mahogany box, and turned around to face the pier.

May you like

Dimitri Vance was staring at the open container, his face completely drained of color. He knew what that box meant. It was not just evidence; it was a death warrant signed by every major crime family in the country who would cut ties with him the moment those records were released.

"You're finished, Dimitri," Alfred said softly, his voice carrying the finality of a judge passing sentence.
