Chapter 6 - A Dangerous Proximity

The revelation hung in the cold air of the bunker like poison.
Marcus. The man who sat at their family dinners, who had held Lily and Rose when they were babies, who knew every security code, every blind spot, and every vulnerability in the Starks estate.
Rory stood up so fast his chair crashed backward against the concrete wall. His fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white.
“Ten years,” Rory spoke, his voice trembling with a dark, suppressed fury that terrified even the hardened boss. “Ten years I trusted him with my life, my business, and my home. And he weaponized my daughters to break me.”
Veronica stood up slowly, walking over to him. Without thinking, she reached out and placed her hand gently over his clenched fist.
“Betrayal always hurts the most when it wears a familiar face, Rory,” she said softly, her thumb tracing the scarred knuckles of his hand.
Rory looked down at her small hand resting against his massive fist. The raw, violent storm in his eyes slowly shifted, replaced by a profound, haunting vulnerability that he showed to no one else on earth. He turned his hand over, interlacing his fingers with hers, holding onto her touch as if she were his only anchor in a collapsing world.
“Why?” Rory whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “I gave him wealth, power, loyalty. Why target my children?”
“Because power makes men greedy, and greed makes them blind,” Veronica answered, her voice a soothing balm against his rage. “He didn't want your money, Rory. He wanted your throne. He thought that if he broke your mind by destroying your daughters, you’d step down, and he could step into the vacuum.”
Rory looked down into her eyes, the distance between them vanishing until he could feel the warmth of her breath. The dark, dangerous predator softened into a man who desperately needed the peace she radiated.
“You shouldn't be here, Veronica,” Rory murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to her eyes. “This world is dark, violent, and full of monsters. You walked in as a maid, and now you’re standing in the middle of a war zone.”
“I’m not a maid anymore, remember?” Veronica smiled softly, a flicker of playfulness dancing in her eyes despite the gravity of the situation. “And as for monsters... I think I can handle them.”
Rory let out a low, rough chuckle, the tension breaking just enough for him to cup her cheek with his free hand. His thumb brushed her cheekbone, his touch surprisingly tender.
“You are something else entirely, Veronica Cruz,” he whispered.
Before either of them could lean in, the security console beeped sharply, shattering the intimate bubble.
Marcus’s terminal had just initiated a download sequence, attempting to wipe the security logs and trigger a secondary explosive charge in the east wing.

Rory’s expression hardened instantly back into the ruthless syndicate boss. He dropped his hand, stepping back.
“Game over,” Rory said coldly. “Marco, get the tactical team ready. We’re going hunting.”
