Chapter 5 - Shadows over the Fortress

“DOWN!” Damian roared!
He lunged across the room, wrapping his massive frame over Elena and Leah, slamming them both down onto the floor behind the heavy stainless steel examination table just as a hail of armor-piercing rounds chewed through the concrete walls above their heads.
Dr. Vance screamed, diving behind a filing cabinet as glass, plaster, and medical equipment exploded around them in a blinding cloud of white dust.
Leah let out a sharp, terrified cry, her small arms clinging frantically around Elena’s waist.
“I’ve got you! I’ve got you, baby!” Elena shouted over the deafening noise, shielding Leah’s body with her own, feeling the hot spray of shattered tile raining down upon her back.
Damian pulled a sleek submachine gun from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket. His face was entirely devoid of fear—replaced by the lethal, calculating fury of a seasoned warlord whose domain had been invaded.
“Frank!” Damian barked into his shoulder lapel comms. “Status at the front gate!”
“Hostile forces breaching the south perimeter!” Frank’s voice crackled through the comms amidst the thunderous sound of heavy gunfire and exploding grenades. “Three blacked-out SUVs just rammed the main gate! They have heavy weapons! It’s Victor Vance’s vanguard!”
“Hold the main hall!” Damian ordered. “I am securing the target!”
Damian turned to Elena on the floor. Her face was covered in drywall dust, her eyes wide with sheer terror, but she was holding Leah so tightly that not an inch of the child’s body was exposed to the window line.
“Listen to me,” Damian commanded, grabbing Elena by the shoulder, his grip iron-tight. “There is a reinforced panic room behind the bookrack in my primary study down the hall. Can you run?”
“Yes!” Elena gasped, her voice trembling but steady.
“When I give the word, you head straight for that door. Do not look back. Do not stop for anything. Do you understand?”
“What about you?” she asked, looking into his eyes.
Damian offered a cold, ruthless smile. “I am going to remind Victor Vance why my father named me after the devil.”
Damian stood up, stepping out from behind the metal table, and unleashed a lethal burst of automatic fire through the shattered window frame. Two sniper muzzle flashes in the cypress trees outside vanished instantly as the shooter fell from the branches.
“MOVE!” Damian shouted.
Elena scrambled to her feet, lifting Leah into her arms, and sprinted out the shattered medical wing door into the high-ceilinged corridor.
The estate was in complete chaos. Emergency red lighting bathed the marble hallways in a crimson glow. The distant thunder of automatic weapons and shattering glass echoed from the ground floor as Damian’s guards engaged Vance’s strike team.
Elena ran as fast as her legs could carry her, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Leah buried her face in Elena’s neck, her small hands clutching Elena’s hair.
“Mama!” Leah cried out amidst the noise. “Scared!”
“I know, baby! Mommy’s here! Mommy’s got you!” Elena yelled back, tears blurring her vision as she rounded the corner toward the master study.
Suddenly, a tall figure clad in black tactical gear stepped out from the shadowy archway at the end of the hall! He carried a heavy shotgun, the red laser sight sweeping across the floor—and fixing directly onto Elena’s chest!
“Found the girl!” the mercenary shouted into his radio headset, raising the shotgun stock to his shoulder!
Elena froze, her blood turning to ice. There was nowhere to hide. No cover. No time to turn back.
“NO!” Elena screamed, turning her back to the shooter, wrapping her entire body around Leah like a human shield!
BOOM!
A thunderous gunshot exploded down the narrow corridor—but the blast didn't come from the tactical shotgun.

The mercenary dropped to his knees, a neat black hole drilled directly between his eyes, before collapsing face-first onto the carpet.
Behind him stood Damian Caruso, his pistol smoking in his hand, walking forward through the haze of gunpowder like an unstoppable force of nature.
