Chapter 9 - The Choice of the Don

Damian stood up, walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the estate’s rolling green gardens.

“If you leave this house today, Elena,” Damian spoke slowly, his back turned to her, “I will provide you with a penthouse in gold-coast Chicago. I will place ten million dollars in a private trust fund in your name. You will never have to work another day in your life. You and Leah can live wherever you wish, in absolute comfort.”

Elena stared at his broad back. “And what is the catch?”

Damian turned around to face her.

“The catch is that Victor Vance’s death created a vacuum in the Chicago underground,” Damian said, his expression serious and grave. “Rival families are watching me closely. They know I have no wife. They know I have no direct heir of my own blood—only my late brother’s daughter.”

He walked back toward the sofa, looking down at little Leah, who was now holding her favorite burgundy rabbit, watching her uncle intently.

“If you leave,” Damian continued, “Leah’s true identity as Julian’s daughter will make her a target for the rest of her life. Every rival who wants to weaken the Caruso empire will look for her. No amount of money or private security guards can guarantee her safety if she lives out in the open world.”

Elena felt a cold chill run down her spine. “Are you telling me I’m a prisoner here?”

“No,” Damian answered firmly, dropping down onto one knee in front of her, meeting her eye level. “I am telling you that I am offering you a choice.”

Elena blinked. “What choice?”

“Stay here,” Damian said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute sincerity that surprised even himself. “Live in this estate. Not as a waitress, not as a guest, but as the head of this household. Legally, we can file a joint custody declaration acknowledging Leah as the legitimate Caruso heir, protected under the full authority of my name and my family’s entire security network.”

Elena stared at him in disbelief. “You… you want me to live with you? In a mafia mansion?”

“I want my brother’s child to grow up safe,” Damian corrected softly. “And I want the woman who raised her—and protected her with her own body three nights ago—to have the life she was robbed of two years ago.”

He looked down at Leah, who reached out and gently patted Damian’s bandaged shoulder with her small hand.

“Uncle Damian stay?” Leah asked, her small voice ringing clear and bright through the quiet room.

Damian looked up at Elena, waiting for her answer.

Elena looked at her daughter’s happy, healthy face. She looked at the man who had fought through a hail of bullets, taken two rounds to his chest, and executed an entire strike team just to keep them safe.

He was a mob boss. He was dangerous, feared, and ruthless to his enemies. But to Leah… he was the protector who had kept her alive when the rest of the world was trying to erase her.

“On one condition,” Elena spoke up, her voice firm and resolute.

Damian raised an eyebrow. “Name it.”

“No more lies,” Elena demanded, looking straight into his dark eyes. “No more secret dossiers, no more mafia politics in front of my daughter. If we live under this roof, we are a family. You protect us, and I run this home.”

Damian stared at her for three long seconds. Then, a slow, genuine smile spread across his face.

He stood up, extending his large, calloused hand toward her.

“Deal, Ms. Rossi.”
