Chapter 8 - The Shadow Doctor

Three days later.

The storm had passed, leaving Chicago bathed in the crisp, pale sunlight of early autumn. The damage at the Caruso estate had been quietly repaired by private contractors; the shattered glass replaced, the marble floors scrubbed clean, the iron gates reinforced with heavy steel plating.

In the high-ceilinged library on the second floor, a small, elegant tea set sat upon the coffee table.

Elena sat on the velvet sofa, wearing a comfortable cream-colored sweater and dark jeans provided by the estate staff. Beside her, Leah was sitting on a plush rug, happily stacking colorful wooden blocks into a tall tower.

For the first time in two years, Leah’s face was bright, her eyes sparkling with childhood joy. She babbled softly to herself as she built her tower, occasionally turning to look at Elena to make sure her mother was still there.

Every time Leah looked up, Elena offered her a warm, loving smile, her heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of peace.

The heavy mahogany doors of the library opened smoothly.

Damian walked into the room. He wore a clean black suit, though a white bandage visible beneath his collar showed where his shoulder had been stitched up after the battle. In his hand, he carried a thick manila folder tied with red string.

“How is she?” Damian asked softly, stepping around Leah’s block tower and sitting in the armchair across from them.

“She ate two pancakes for breakfast,” Elena smiled, her voice filled with emotion. “And she told me her favorite color is purple.”

Damian offered a small, rare nod of satisfaction. He placed the manila folder on the table between them.

“What is that?” Elena asked, looking at the papers.

“Dr. Adrian Keller was detained at Zurich Airport by Swiss authorities two days ago,” Damian explained calmly. “It turns out he was wanted by Interpol for international adoption fraud and medical malpractice.”

Elena’s posture stiffened. “Did he talk?”

“He sang like a bird,” Damian stated flatly. “This folder contains the complete, unredacted medical file from the St. Verena Clinic on October 17th two years ago. It contains your original admission records, Leah’s true birth certificate listing you as the mother, and Julian Caruso as the father.”

Elena reached out with a trembling hand, picking up the birth certificate.

There it was. Printed in clear black ink:

Child Name: Leah Rossi Caruso. Mother: Elena Rossi. Father: Julian Caruso.

Tears welled in Elena’s eyes, dripping onto the heavy paper. Two years of grief, doubt, and psychological pain were erased in a single moment of legal truth.

“And Keller?” Elena asked, looking up.

“He will spend the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security prison in Geneva,” Damian answered coldly. “He will never practice medicine—or see the sun—again.”

Elena took a deep, shuddering breath, holding the document against her chest. She looked around the luxurious library, then down at Leah, then back at Damian.

“So… what happens now, Damian?” she asked softly. “The war is over. The truth is out. Do I take my daughter and leave?”

Damian looked into Elena’s eyes. The room fell into a quiet, heavy stillness.
