Chapter 9 - The Public Confrontation

The gubernatorial gala was the crown jewel of William Fletcher’s campaign—a black-tie affair held at the grandest hotel in Burlington, filled with donors, local politicians, and media elites. The Senator stood at the podium, his smile wide and practiced, ready to deliver a speech that would cement his frontrunner status. He was unaware that the walls of his empire were buckling.

Benjamin and Sarah arrived at the service entrance, wearing borrowed staff uniforms they had secured from a sympathetic contact. They navigated the labyrinthine backstage corridors, moving toward the main audio-visual control room.

"If we can bypass the local feed, we can broadcast the files directly to the main stage projectors," Sarah whispered, her fingers flying across her portable laptop as she bridged their connection to the hall’s network.

Suddenly, the door burst open. Miller, the Senator’s head of security, stepped in, his weapon drawn.

"It’s over, Hayes," Miller sneered, gesturing for them to step away from the terminal.

Benjamin didn't flinch. He looked at his watch. 11:59 AM. "You’re too late, Miller," Benjamin said, his voice echoing in the small room.

On the main stage, the Senator’s image flickered, replaced by a black screen, followed by a live, scrolling feed of the files: financial records, the Blackwood Project documents, and the damning audio of Sophie’s confession. The room erupted in a chaotic roar of gasps and shouting as the evidence of the Senator’s crimes was projected in high definition for the city’s most influential people to see.
