Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The aftermath was swift and absolute. As the projection continued to play, federal agents who had been monitoring the public data stream descended upon the gala. Senator William Fletcher was seen by hundreds of onlookers as he was led out in handcuffs, his face a mask of disbelief and rage that vanished as the flashing lights of the media cameras overwhelmed him.

Benjamin didn't stay to watch the spectacle. He was already driving back to the hospital, his heart lighter than it had been in weeks.

When he entered the room, Sophie was sitting up, watching the news coverage on the wall-mounted television. When she saw him, the haunted look in her eyes finally broke, replaced by a tentative, genuine smile. Clara was there, sitting by the bedside, her expression one of profound, dazed relief as she began to process the decades of psychological manipulation she had suffered at the hands of her father.

"I told them, Daddy," Sophie whispered as he pulled her into a tight, protective embrace.

"I know, baby," Benjamin replied, his voice thick with emotion. "And you were the bravest person I’ve ever known."

The recovery would be long, and the scars—both physical and psychological—would take time to heal, but the shadow that had loomed over their lives had been dispelled. The truth had cost them everything they thought they knew, but it had finally set them free. As the sun set over the Vermont hills, the house they would return to was no longer a cage, but a beginning.
