Chapter 8 - The Shadow Operative

Minutes ticked by like hours inside the underground vault. The air inside the small room was already beginning to feel heavy and warm as oxygen levels slowly depleted.

I didn't waste time panicking. I immediately went to work on the room’s main terminal.

William believed the vault was completely isolated, but as an investigative reporter who had covered cyber-warfare in Eastern Europe, I knew that high-tech surveillance systems required a physical network gateway to upload backup data to off-site cloud servers.

I crawled beneath the main console and pulled back the paneling. Hidden behind a bundle of fiber-optic cables was a hardwired Ethernet switch connected to a local satellite uplink on the roof.

I pulled out my satellite burner phone—a ruggedized, military-grade device equipped with an encrypted hardware bypass tool designed for field journalists operating in blacked-out war zones.

I plugged the phone’s interface cable directly into the primary network switch.

The phone’s screen flashed green.

Connection Established. Uplink Active.

A cold, triumphant smile touched my lips. William had spent millions securing his house from the outside world, but he had left his internal network exposed to anyone who managed to reach the physical core.

I didn't just copy the red ledger. I initiated a full-spectrum drive mirror, pulling every audio file, video recording, financial record, and email archive stored on the central server.

While the progress bar crept slowly across the screen—15%... 32%... 54%—I heard a muffled sound outside the heavy steel door.

The sound of electric power tools.

They weren't planning to leave me down here to suffocate slowly. William was sending his private security team to dispose of me quietly before dawn.

I watched the progress bar hit 98%... 100%.

Transfer Complete. File size: 480 Gigabytes.

I immediately initiated a secure, multi-threaded upload to six independent international press consortiums, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Attached to the file was a live audio and video stream broadcast directly from my phone’s front-facing camera.

I set the phone on the desk, facing the heavy steel door, and waited.

Outside, the heavy mechanical locks began to grind open.
