Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The morning sun broke over the snowy mountains of Vermont, casting a pale, cold light across the Fletcher estate.

The long driveway was filled with federal vehicles, mobile command units, state police cruisers, and news vans from every major network in North America. Reporters stood behind yellow crime scene tape, speaking frantically into cameras as federal agents carried box after box of evidence out of the mansion’s front doors.

I sat on the bumper of an FBI ambulance, a thick wool blanket wrapped around my shoulders, holding a hot cup of coffee in my cold hands.

Agent Miller stepped out from the mansion’s entrance, holding a tablet under his arm, and walked down the stone steps toward me.

“It’s done, Ben,” Miller said, leaning against the ambulance beside me. “We executed federal search warrants on Fletcher’s bank accounts, his campaign offices, and three of his properties. The evidence on that server... it’s bigger than we ever imagined. It’s going to take down half the state government.”

“What about Victoria?” I asked quietly, looking out over the crowded driveway.

Miller sighed softly. “She’s being questioned at the federal courthouse in Burlington right now. She’s cooperating fully, trying to secure a plea deal by testifying against her father. Her lawyers are claiming she acted under extreme psychological coercion.”

I closed my eyes, feeling a profound, hollow sadness. She had been a victim of her father’s toxicity long before I met her, but in the end, she had chosen to become his accomplice rather than protect her own child.

“And Sophie?” I asked, opening my eyes.

A small, familiar silver SUV pulled into the staging area, escorted by two state trooper vehicles.

The passenger door opened, and Rachel stepped out. She reached into the back seat and gently lifted Sophie into her arms.

My heart surged. I threw the blanket aside and stood up, walking quickly toward them.

Sophie was wearing a warm pink winter coat, her white-gauzed feet tucked into soft, oversized boots. When she saw me walking toward her, her face lit up.

“Daddy!”

The word was small, delicate, and raspy from disuse, but to my ears, it was the most beautiful sound in the entire universe.

Rachel burst into tears as she set Sophie down gently onto her feet. Sophie took three awkward, carefully balanced steps toward me, her small arms outstretched.

I dropped to my knees in the snow, catching her in my arms and pulling her tight against my chest.

“Daddy’s here, baby,” I choked out, tears spilling freely down my cheeks as I held my daughter tightly against the cold morning wind. “Daddy’s right here. You’re free. We’re both free.”
