Chapter 5 - The Heir's Humiliation

By Wednesday afternoon, the public narrative surrounding Sterling Vanguard had completely disintegrated.
Desperate to project an image of calm and control to their panicking shareholders, Arthur organized an emergency live press conference in the lobby of their Manhattan headquarters.
Over fifty journalists, network camera crews, and financial analysts packed the marble lobby. Satellite trucks lined Madison Avenue outside, their broadcast dishes pointed toward the sky.
Arthur stood behind a mahogany podium bearing the company crest, trying to maintain his stoic, commanding presence. Beside him, Chloe wore a bright white business suit, her hair styled flawlessly, putting on her best confident executive smile for the rolling cameras.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Arthur announced into the bank of microphones. "There have been baseless rumors circulating regarding our company's operational capabilities. I am here today to assure our investors, clients, and partners that Sterling Vanguard remains as rock-solid as ever."
He gestured gracefully toward Chloe.
"Our Vice President of Operations, Chloe Vance, has successfully spearheaded our infrastructure transition," Arthur lied smoothly. "Our systems will be fully restored by midnight, and we are opening new strategic avenues that will double our market valuation."
A senior reporter from Bloomberg raised her hand immediately. "Mr. Vance! If systems are being restored, why did Apex Capital just file a formal notice of loan default against your firm twenty minutes ago?"
Arthur’s smile froze. "Apex Capital is... merely engaged in routine contractual reviews—"
"Another question, Mr. Vance!" a reporter from the Wall Street Journal interrupted loudly. "Is it true that your former CTO, Elena Vance, was the sole author of your infrastructure, and that she has filed criminal assault charges against you in Suffolk County?"
Murmurs erupted across the lobby. Camera flashes began going off in rapid, blinding succession: Flash! Flash! Flash!
Chloe stepped up to the microphone, her face flushed with anger as she tried to regain control of the narrative.
"My sister, Elena, was an unstable employee who was let go due to severe incompetence!" Chloe lied loudly, leaning into the microphones. "She is attempting to blackmail our family because she was removed from our father's personal estate! She has no technical leverage over this firm, and her wild accusations regarding our family are completely fabricated!"
Suddenly, every smartphone in the lobby chimed in unison.
Notifications lit up across fifty reporters' screens simultaneously.
It was an automated press release issued directly by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, accompanied by a public video link.
"Look at the DA release!" a cameraman shouted.
The reporters looked down at their screens. Across fifty mobile displays, the security footage from the Hamptons pool played in full, unedited high-definition sound and video.
The audio played loudly through a reporter’s speaker held near the microphone stand:
Chloe's voice echoing clearly: "Oops... looks like the little brat needs a bath!" Arthur's voice booming: "Leave her! If she can't survive water, she doesn't deserve life!"
The lobby went dead quiet for one agonizing second.
Then, pure, unadulterated pandemonium broke out.
"Miss Vance! Did you push a four-year-old child into a pool?!" a reporter screamed.
"Mr. Vance! Are you under criminal investigation for choking your daughter?!"
"Chloe! What about the Cayman Island accounts identified in the SEC filing?!"
Chloe backed away from the podium as if she had been hit by a physical blow. Her eyes went wide with sheer terror as dozens of cameras swarmed toward her, recording her gasping, panicked face live on international television.
"No! Turn those cameras off! Turn them off!" Chloe shrieked, covering her face with her designer leather folder.
Arthur tried to grab the podium to steady himself, but his legs gave out. He stumbled backward, knocking the microphone stand over with a deafening metallic screech that echoed across the marble lobby.

Security guards rushed forward, trying to form a human barrier, but the damage was done.
On live television, across every major news network in America, the grand illusion of the Vance family was shattered forever. They were no longer viewed as elite business tycoons—they were exposed to forty million viewers as cruel, abusive, and utterly incompetent frauds.
