Chapter 7 - The Arrest at the Gala

The final public reckoning took place not in the shadows of a police station, but under the blinding lights of the New York Federal Courthouse plaza.

It was a crisp Thursday afternoon. Arthur and Chloe had spent the previous four days staying in a cheap airport motel outside Queens, their personal credit cards declined, their luxury vehicles seized, and their high-priced defense attorneys resigning one by one due to unpaid retainer fees.

They had been formally summoned by the Federal District Court for an emergency arraignment on grand jury indictments.

As their yellow taxi pulled up to the courthouse curb, over a hundred reporters and news crews swarmed the sidewalk.

Arthur stepped out of the cab wearing a wrinkled, ill-fitting suit he had bought off the rack at a department store. He looked twenty years older, his spine hunched, his hands trembling violently. Chloe followed behind him, hiding her face beneath an oversized scarf, ducking her head as cameras flashed relentlessly.

"Mr. Vance! Are you pleading guilty to federal tax fraud?!"

"Chloe! How do you respond to the child abuse charges?!"

They pushed through the crowd, desperate to reach the heavy bronze doors of the courthouse where their court-appointed public defender was waiting.

Just as they reached the top of the concrete steps, three black federal SUVs pulled up to the curb with siren chirps.

Agent Sarah Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, accompanied by four armed Federal Marshals and two Suffolk County detectives.

"Arthur Vance! Chloe Vance!" Agent Miller’s voice boomed across the crowded plaza through a bullhorn. "Stop where you are!"

Arthur turned around slowly, his face as white as a sheet.

Agent Miller marched up the stairs, pulling a thick, gold-embossed federal arrest warrant from her coat.

"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest by order of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York," Agent Miller announced loudly so every news microphone picked up her words.

"Charges include: Sixteen counts of Federal Wire Fraud, Four counts of Tax Evasion, Corporate Conspiracy, and Subornation of Perjury."

She turned her gaze to Chloe, whose hands were shaking so violently she dropped her handbag onto the concrete steps.

"Chloe Vance, you are under arrest for Eight counts of Money Laundering, Federal Tax Evasion, and an outstanding state warrant from Suffolk County for Second-Degree Attempted Murder and Felony Child Endangerment."

"No! Please!" Chloe shrieked, backing away toward the bronze doors. "It wasn't my fault! My father told me to do it! He made me transfer the money! He told me to push the girl!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Arthur roared, turning on his daughter in front of fifty rolling news cameras. "You selfish, incompetent brat! You ruined this family! You stole the money for your own luxury shopping!"

"You choked Elena!" Chloe screamed back, tears streaming down her messy makeup. "You told her to let Lily drown! I have it on tape! You're a monster!"

The Federal Marshals stepped in between them, grabbing Arthur’s arms and forcing him down onto his knees on the cold marble steps.

CLICK. CLICK.

The heavy steel handcuffs locked around Arthur’s wrists.

Beside him, a female detective pulled Chloe’s arms behind her back, snapping handcuffs around her manicured wrists as she howled in pathetic, ugly despair.

I stood at the top of the courthouse balcony, wearing a dark coat, holding four-year-old Lily in my arms. Lily was wearing a bright yellow winter coat, her small hand resting safely around my neck, watching the scene below with quiet, innocent curiosity.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder. "Why is Aunt Chloe crying?"

I looked down at the two pathetic figures being pushed into the back of the federal prison vans, surrounded by the screaming press and flashing cameras.

"She’s crying, sweetheart," I said softly, stroking Lily’s soft hair, "because she finally learned that actions have consequences."
