Chapter 5 - Ethan’s Arrogance and the Mask Slips

Richard reached the top landing, his boots pivoting sharply toward the double doors of the master suite. The door stood slightly ajar, warm yellow light spilling out into the dimly lit hallway.

He raised his weapon, keeping his finger alongside the trigger guard, and pushed the door open with the barrel of his gun.

The scene inside froze instantly.

The master bedroom was immense, featuring a king-sized bed, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the estate, and an expensive walnut desk.

Emily was curled in a ball against the base of a heavy armchair near the window. Her hair was disheveled, her blouse torn at the shoulder, and a dark, ugly purple bruise blossomed across her left cheekbone. She was shaking uncontrollably, her hands clutching her knees.

Standing over her was Ethan Caldwell.

Ethan didn't look like the smiling, philanthropic tech genius featured on magazine covers. His designer silk shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to reveal thick forearms, and his face was twisted into a mask of cold, unbridled fury. In his hand, he held Emily’s smartphone, the screen cracked down the middle.

When the door swung open, Ethan spun around, expecting a servant or a security guard.

Instead, he found the barrel of a tactical firearm pointed directly between his eyes.

Ethan froze. For a fraction of a second, raw panic flickered across his face. But then, as his eyes traveled up from the gun barrel to Richard’s granite-hard face, the billionaire's arrogant facade rushed back to fill the void.

Slowly, deliberately, Ethan lowered his hand holding the phone, standing up to his full height. He adjusted his collar with a sickening display of calm confidence.

"Colonel Hayes," Ethan said, a condescending smirk twisting his lips. "Trespassing on private property with a firearm. I suppose they didn't teach you property laws in the nursing home."

Richard didn't lower the gun by a millimeter. His voice was a lethal whisper.

"Step away from my daughter, Ethan. Right now."

Ethan let out a short, mocking laugh. He tossed the broken phone onto the bed and turned to Emily, gesturing with an open palm.

"Look at this, Em," Ethan sneered, his voice dripping with condescension. "Your daddy brought his old army toys to our house. Does he think he’s liberating a foreign village? Does he think he can intimidate me?"

Emily raised her tear-streaked face, her voice a terrified whisper. "Dad... please... get out of here. He’s crazy. He’ll ruin you..."

"Shut up, Emily!" Ethan snapped, whipping around to glare at her before turning his attention back to Richard.

"Listen to me, Colonel," Ethan said, stepping forward, invading Richard’s personal space with the entitled swagger of a man who believed his money could buy immunity from the laws of physics and morality. "You have exactly ten seconds to holster that weapon, walk out my front door, and drive back to your little farm in the country. If you don't, I will call my legal team—men whose retainer fees are higher than your entire military pension—and have you locked away in a federal penitentiary before sundown."

Ethan smiled, entirely unaware of the catastrophic miscalculation he was making.

He thought power came from bank accounts.

He thought fear came from lawsuits.

He had no idea what true power looked like.
