Chapter 7 - The Financial Takedown and Federal Backup

Within four minutes of Ethan hitting the floor, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion burst open once more.
This time, it wasn't one man.
It was a tactical unit of federal marshals and state police officers, led by Colonel Hayes’s long-time friend and former military intelligence colleague, General Marcus Vance (ret.), who had received the encrypted data dump sent automatically from Richard’s tactical tap.
Heavy boots thundered up the grand staircase.
"Clear!" shouted a voice from the hallway.
General Vance stepped into the master bedroom, taking in the scene with a practiced, stone-cold eye: Ethan Caldwell out cold on the floor, Emily wrapped safely in her father’s arms, and the broken phone lying on the bed.
Marcus let out a slow whistle. "Looks like you haven't lost your touch, Richard."
"Get my daughter out of here, Marcus," Richard said, gently helping Emily to her feet and guiding her toward the two female medics who had accompanied the team. "Get her to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Full forensic exam. Document every single scar, every single bruise, every single broken bone."
"Done," Marcus nodded, signaling the medics to take Emily downstairs. As Emily passed by, she squeezed her father’s hand so hard her knuckles turned white.
"Thank you, Dad," she whispered.
"Go on, sweetheart," Richard smiled gently. "Your old man has some business to finish."
Once Emily was out of earshot, Richard turned his attention back to Marcus. The general was kneeling beside the unconscious tech tycoon, tapping Ethan’s cheek with the back of his hand to wake him up.
"What about the servers?" Richard asked, pulling out his satellite phone.
"Already handled," Marcus grinned, holding up a ruggedized military laptop. "Your tactical tap downloaded six years of high-definition video surveillance and audio recordings from this house. Every time Caldwell locked your daughter in this room, every time he threatened her, every time he used his lawyers to intimidate her—it’s all right here on this hard drive."
Ethan groaned from the floor, stirring slowly. He blinked against the bright overhead light, his jaw swelling rapidly into a massive purple bruise. He reached up to touch his face, wincing in agony.
"What... what is this?" Ethan slurred, trying to push himself up. "Who the hell are you people? I'm going to sue every single one of you—"
Marcus reached down, grabbed Ethan by the collar of his expensive silk shirt, and hoisted him upright, slamming him against the wall.
"You aren't suing anybody, Mr. Caldwell," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "Federal marshals have already seized your corporate bank accounts. Your board of directors was just sent an encrypted package containing every single surveillance file from this house. And the SEC is currently freezing all assets associated with your cybersecurity firm due to federal wire fraud and domestic terrorism investigations."
Ethan’s face went entirely slack. The color drained from his skin until he looked like a corpse.
"No..." Ethan whispered, shaking his head in sheer disbelief. "No, you can't do that. I'm Ethan Caldwell! I control the board! I control the media!"
"You controlled a house full of cameras, Ethan," Richard said, walking over and standing inches away from the billionaire. "You forgot that cameras record everything. Not just what you want them to see."
Two federal marshals stepped forward, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around Ethan’s wrists with a sharp, echoing click.
"Let's go, Mr. Caldwell," the lead marshal said, hauling the tech titan to his feet. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
May you like
As Ethan was dragged out of the master bedroom, his head hung low in utter disgrace, Richard stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the squad cars waiting in the courtyard below.
The golden cage had finally been shattered.
