Chapter 4 - The Charlotte Ambush

The tires of the Boeing 737 hit the tarmac at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with a heavy thud, the thrust reversers roaring as the aircraft slowed down.
The cabin lights hummed to life. Around them, passengers began standing up, opening overhead bins, and gathering their coats.
Reid remained seated, his eyes fixed on the small airplane window. Outside, through the rain-streaked glass, two sleek black SUVs were parked on the tarmac near the private gate terminal, their hazard lights blinking rhythmically in the damp evening air.
"They're already here," Reid muttered quietly.
Brooke adjusted Lily’s baby carrier, strapping her securely against her chest. She put on her dark sunglasses, pulled her coat collar up, and wrapped a soft silk scarf around her hair.
"They are looking for Reid Vance," Brooke said, her voice surprisingly steady as she handed Reid her small folded baby stroller. "A solitary corporate executive in a navy jacket carrying a briefcase. They are not looking for a tired husband helping his wife carry a baby stroller through baggage claim."
Reid looked at the stroller, then down at his expensive leather briefcase.
Without hesitation, he slipped his encrypted flash drive into the hidden inner lining of Lily’s plush teddy bear—the toy he had used to make the baby laugh two hours ago—and tucked the bear into the stroller’s lower compartment. He then stuffed his briefcase into an overhead bin, leaving it behind.
"You're brilliant, Brooke," Reid whispered.
"I’m an auditor," she replied smoothly. "We hide things in plain sight."
They stepped off the plane into the bustling jetway. The air was cool and filled with the smell of aviation fuel and damp carpet.
As they walked through the narrow corridor toward the main terminal concourse, Brooke spotted two tall men in dark suits standing near the exit door, their hands casually resting near their belts. One of them held a tablet displaying a live flight manifest.
As Reid and Brooke approached, the guard with the tablet stepped forward, his eyes scanning the crowd with sharp, practiced precision. His eyes landed on Reid’s navy jacket and neatly trimmed beard.
"Excuse me, sir," the guard said, extending a thick arm to block their path. "Mr. Vance?"
Reid didn't flinch. He didn't look nervous.
Before Reid could answer, Brooke stepped forward, letting out a heavy, exasperated sigh. She shoved a half-empty baby bottle toward the guard’s chest.
"Oh, thank God!" Brooke exclaimed loudly, her voice echoing in the jetway. "Are you the airport handicap escort? Can you hold this? My husband’s back is thrown out from carrying the stroller, the baby has a dirty diaper, and our flight was delayed forty minutes in Dallas! Where is the family lounge?!"
The guard blinked, visibly startled. He looked down at the sticky plastic baby bottle in his hand, then looked at Reid, who was leaning slightly to one side, holding his lower back with a grimace of pain while pushing the stroller.
"Uh... no, ma'am," the guard stammered, quickly handing the bottle back as if it were toxic. "We’re private security for—"
"I don't care who you are!" Brooke snapped, her voice rising to a high, stressed pitch that caused several passing tourists to turn and stare. "If you aren't going to help me carry this diaper bag, get out of my way! My baby hasn't slept in six hours!"
The second guard winced, stepping back to avoid the scene. "Let them pass, Frank. That’s not him. Vance doesn't have a kid, and he definitely doesn't travel like a suburban dad."
"Sorry, ma'am," the first guard mumbled, stepping aside.
Brooke didn't wait. She grabbed Reid’s arm and pushed past them into the crowded, brightly lit main terminal of Charlotte Douglas.
They walked briskly through Concourse B, blending into the sea of evening commuters, college students, and families. They didn't stop at baggage claim—Brooke’s single suitcase was small enough to carry, and Reid had left his luggage in Dallas.
They exited through the lower arrival doors into the cool North Carolina night air.
A sleek gray Audi sedan was idling at the curb, its hazard lights flashing.
As soon as they stepped onto the curb, the driver’s door opened, and a young woman in a sharp charcoal suit stepped out. She had sharp dark eyes, her hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, and a secure communications earpiece in her ear.
"Mr. Vance!" the woman called out, opening the rear door. "Get in. Quickly."
"Brooke, this is Maya," Reid said, guiding Brooke and Lily into the backseat before getting in beside them. "She’s my head of private security—the only person in my executive team who didn't take Trevor’s bribe."
Maya slammed the door shut, slid into the driver's seat, and accelerated into the airport traffic loop just as two black SUVs came speeding around the corner from the private terminal.
"Did they see you?" Maya asked, eyes checking the rearview mirror.
"They checked us at the jetway," Reid said, a faint smile touching his lips. "And Brooke handled them like a professional operative."
Maya glanced in the mirror, her sharp eyes meeting Brooke’s. "You’re Brooke Ellery? The compliance officer from Apex?"
Brooke blinked. "You know who I am?"
"Mr. Vance had me run a full background check on Trevor Madsen’s personal life forty-eight hours ago," Maya explained, navigating the Audi onto Interstate 85 North toward downtown Charlotte. "We knew Trevor had locked you out. We tried to reach you in Dallas, but Trevor had deactivated your cell phone service."
Brooke took off her sunglasses, staring at the back of Maya’s head. "You were looking for me?"
Reid turned to Brooke, his expression deeply sincere.
"I didn't know you were going to be on Seat 18A, Brooke," Reid said softly. "That was pure chance. But I knew Trevor had a wife who had been quietly removed from his life right before the coup began. I needed to make sure you were safe."
Brooke looked down at Lily, who was now awake, grabbing at Reid’s necktie with her tiny hands.
"Where are we going?" Brooke asked.
"To a safehouse in Davidson," Maya replied, turning the car onto a quiet, tree-lined highway. "We have high-speed servers, an encrypted satellite link, and two forensic accountants waiting. We have thirty-six hours before the SEC opening bell on Monday morning."
Reid looked at Brooke, holding out his hand.
"Ready to break your husband’s lock, Brooke?"
May you like
Brooke reached into the stroller, pulled out the plush teddy bear, and unzipped its back, revealing the glowing silver flash drive.
"Let's shatter it," she said.
