Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

Sunday afternoon, 2:15 p.m.

The Grand Ballroom of the Charlotte Ritz-Carlton was packed with over two hundred business journalists, financial analysts, local politicians, and high-ranking executives from Vance Global Logistics.

At the front of the room stood a polished mahogany stage equipped with twelve microphones, two large digital projection screens, and a long table draped in dark velvet.

Trevor Madsen stood near the side entrance, adjusting his crisp, white Italian silk tie in a full-length mirror. He wore a six-thousand-dollar tailored navy suit, expensive leather shoes, and a gold watch that sparkled under the bright ballroom chandeliers.

Beside him stood Chloe, wearing a dazzling white designer dress, sipping champagne from a crystal glass, smiling brilliantly for the cameras hovering near the press enclosure.

"You look like a CEO, baby," Chloe purred, running her red-nailed fingers over his lapel.

Trevor smirked, admiring his reflection. "In forty-five minutes, I am the CEO. The board vote is a formality. Reid Vance is hiding somewhere in Texas like a scared dog, his bank accounts are frozen, and the SEC is issuing a warrant for his arrest by five o'clock."

"What about your ex-wife?" Chloe asked casually, sipping her drink. "Did she cause any trouble in Dallas?"

Trevor let out a contemptuous snort. "Brooke? Please. She’s probably sitting in her mother’s tiny kitchen in Charlotte right now, crying over a bowl of soup. She doesn't have a nickel to her name. She’s harmless."

A staff member stepped up, holding a clipboard. "Mr. Madsen, five minutes until press time. The board members are seated."

"Thank you," Trevor said smoothly, checking his watch.

He walked onto the stage with a confident, effortless stride, flashing a practiced, authoritative smile toward the flashing cameras. The room fell into a quiet, expectant hush.

Trevor stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone.

"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the press, honored board members, and distinguished guests," Trevor began, his voice rich, resonant, and dripping with rehearsed sincerity. "Today is a somber yet historic day for Vance Global Logistics. As you know, over the past week, tragic evidence of financial misconduct by our former Chief Executive, Mr. Reid Vance, has come to light."

He paused, lowering his eyes in a masterclass of staged sorrow.

"It pains me deeply to report that Mr. Vance has fled federal jurisdiction," Trevor continued, holding up a sleek tablet. "Today, as Chief Operating Officer, I am presenting the final forensic audit to our board of directors, proving that Mr. Vance redirected over four hundred million dollars into illegal offshore—"

CLICK.

The heavy double doors at the back of the Grand Ballroom swung open with a loud, echoing crack.

The sound cut through Trevor’s speech like a gunshot.

Journalists turned their heads. Cameras swung away from the stage.

Walking down the center aisle, bathed in the bright light of the crystal chandeliers, came Reid Vance.

He was dressed in an immaculate, bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. He walked with total, majestic authority, his gray eyes fixed on the stage like two polished steel blades.

Beside him walked Brooke Ellery.

She wore an elegant, cream-colored silk suit, her dark hair styled into sleek, glamorous waves, carrying a slender leather briefcase. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely unshakeable.

Behind them walked Maya and four uniformed officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, accompanied by two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A violent, collective gasp erupted from the two hundred journalists in the room. Flashbulbs exploded in a blinding storm of white light.

"My God! It’s Reid Vance!" a reporter screamed, shoving a microphone forward. "Mr. Vance! Are you surrendering to federal authorities?!"

Trevor’s face instantly went white as chalk. The tablet in his hand slipped from his fingers, hitting the wooden podium with a loud thwack.

"Reid..." Trevor stammered into the microphone, his voice cracking, his slick confidence instantly disintegrating into blind panic. "What... what is this? Security! Remove this man! He is under federal investigation!"

Reid didn't stop until he reached the front of the stage. He didn't look at Trevor with anger. He looked at him with the cold, effortless pity a man reserves for an insect.

"I’m not under investigation, Trevor," Reid’s voice boomed through the room without needing a microphone. "But you are."

Brooke stepped up beside Reid, opening her leather briefcase.

She pulled out a thick document stamped with the official red seal of the United States Federal District Court and laid it directly onto the podium in front of Trevor.

"Hello, Trevor," Brooke said, her voice clear, calm, and carrying to every corner of the silent ballroom.

Trevor stared at her, his eyes wide, his chest heaving as if he couldn't get air into his lungs. "Brooke... what... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be—"

"I’m supposed to be crying in my mother's kitchen, right?" Brooke interrupted, a cool, lethal smile touching her lips. "Unfortunately for you, I took a flight from Dallas on Friday. Seat 18A."

She tapped the document on the podium.

"This is an emergency federal indictment issued twenty minutes ago by Judge Harrison," Brooke announced, turning to face the wall of news cameras. "It contains full, unredacted transaction logs proving that Trevor Madsen fabricated corporate evidence, committed wire fraud, forged digital signatures, and embezzled four hundred million dollars from the Vance Global pension fund into a private Swiss account under Vance-Elliott Holdings."

"That's a lie!" Trevor shrieked, his voice reaching a shrill, hysterical pitch. "She’s my bitter ex-wife! She’s crazy! She doesn't have access to those files!"

"I didn't need access, Trevor," Brooke replied softly, leaning closer so only he could hear her next words. "I used your master password. 10142018-Buster99-295000."

Trevor’s knees buckled.

He grabbed the edges of the podium to keep from collapsing onto the floor, his face drained of every drop of color, his body trembling violently.

The lead SEC agent stepped onto the stage, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his coat.

"Trevor Madsen," the agent said clearly. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, embezzlement, and filing false federal instruments. You have the right to remain silent."

CLICK.

The cold steel locked around Trevor’s wrists right in front of forty news cameras, twenty board members, and Chloe, who dropped her champagne glass onto the carpet and ran out the side exit in sheer terror.

As the officers dragged a sobbing, hyperventilating Trevor off the stage, Reid stepped up to the central microphone.

He looked out at the room, then looked down at Brooke, extending his hand to her.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Reid announced into the microphone, his voice steady, strong, and full of absolute resolve. "Vance Global Logistics is secure. And I am pleased to announce the appointment of our new Chief Risk and Compliance Officer—Mrs. Brooke Ellery."

The room erupted into thunderous, deafening applause.

Brooke stepped up to the podium beside Reid, looking into the bright lights, holding his hand tightly in hers.
