Chapter 7 - The Restitution of Grace

Two months later.
The early morning sun rose over the quiet, tree-lined streets of Myers Park, one of Charlotte’s most beautiful historic neighborhoods.
Brooke stood on the wide stone porch of a charming, three-story brick home. The yard was filled with blooming white hydrangeas, old oak trees, and a custom-built wooden swing set standing on the lush green lawn.
The house was hers.
Not Trevor’s. Not a rental.
It was bought and paid for in full through the formal legal restitution settlement executed by the federal bankruptcy court, which had stripped Trevor of every single asset he possessed—his Porsche, his offshore accounts, his private investments—and transferred them back to Brooke as legal compensation for marital fraud and stolen assets.
Trevor was currently serving an eighteen-year sentence at a federal correctional facility in North Carolina, with no possibility of parole for twelve years.
Brooke walked down the stone steps into the sunlit garden, carrying a cup of tea.
On the soft green grass, twelve-month-old Lily was taking her very first steps, her little chubby legs wobbling happily as she reached toward a tall man kneeling five feet away.
"Come on, Lily," Reid cheered gently, his hands held out open, a warm, radiant smile illuminating his face. "You can do it. Just two more steps."
Lily let out a joyous, squeaking giggle, took two tiny, unsteady steps forward, and tumbled safely into Reid’s arms.
Reid caught her smoothly, lifting her into the air, making her laugh hysterically as he swung her around before holding her close against his chest.
Brooke watched them from the stone path, a deep, unshakeable warmth blooming in her heart.
In two months, Reid Vance had completely restructured Vance Global Logistics, turning it into one of the most transparent, ethically managed corporations in North America. He had established a multi-million-dollar emergency relief fund for single mothers in North Carolina, named the Lily Ellery Foundation.
But more importantly... he had spent every single weekend at this house.
He didn't bring corporate bodyguards. He didn't bring executive stress. He brought wooden toys for Lily, fresh flowers for the kitchen, and a quiet, fierce devotion that had slowly, beautifully healed every broken piece of Brooke’s heart.
Reid walked over to Brooke, holding the giggling baby against his shoulder.
"She took three full steps today," Reid said proudly, his gray eyes shining with quiet delight. "She’s going to be running by next month."
"She learns fast," Brooke smiled, reaching up to gently smooth back a stray lock of gray hair at Reid’s temple. "Just like her favorite person."
Reid set Lily down on a soft picnic blanket on the grass, giving her a plastic red truck to play with, before turning back to face Brooke.
He looked at her for a long, silent moment. The crisp morning breeze moved through the oak trees, rustling the leaves overhead.
"Brooke," Reid said softly, his voice dropping into a deep, tender register.
"Yes, Reid?"
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
Brooke’s breath caught in her throat.
Reid didn't drop to one knee with grand corporate drama. He simply stood before her in the quiet morning light, his eyes completely open, vulnerable, and full of unconditional love.
He opened the box. Inside sat an exquisite ring featuring a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond set in platinum.
"Two months ago, I was sitting on a flight from Dallas, convinced that my life’s work was over," Reid said, holding her hand gently in his. "I thought I was sitting next to a stranger who needed a shoulder to rest on."
He looked down at their joined hands, then up into her brown eyes.
"I didn't know that stranger would save my life," Reid whispered. "I didn't know she would show me what real strength, real honor, and real courage look like. I don't want to protect you because of a corporate coup, Brooke. I want to protect you and Lily for the rest of my life. Because I love you."
Teardrops—warm, happy, clean tears—spilled over Brooke’s eyelashes.
"Reid..." she breathed.
"Will you marry me, Brooke?" he asked softly. "Will you let me be a father to Lily, a partner to you, and build a real home together?"
Brooke didn't answer with words.
She stepped forward, wrapped her arms around his neck, and pulled him down into a deep, passionate kiss.
Reid wrapped his arms securely around her waist, holding her tight against his chest, holding her like she was the most precious thing in the world.

When she finally pulled back slightly, her forehead resting against his, she smiled through her tears.
"Yes," Brooke whispered. "Yes, Reid. A thousand times yes."
