Chapter 4 - The Audit Unleashed

My father sprang up from his chair so fast he knocked his wine glass over, sending dark red liquid spreading across the white tablecloth like a pool of blood.
"You wouldn't dare!" he hissed, leaning over the table, his knuckles white. "I am your father! Everything I did was to protect this family's future!"
"You didn't protect this family, Richard," I said, dropping the casual 'Dad' entirely. "You bled an eighty-two-year-old woman dry while she lay in a hospital bed in her own home. You stopped paying her supplemental insurance six months ago to cover your own margin calls, which is why I had to pay for her physical therapy out of my own savings."
"Chloe, darling, let's be reasonable," my mother pleaded, her hands trembling as she reached across the table toward me, her voice suddenly dripping with fake maternal affection. "We’re family. Whatever misunderstandings happened between your father and your grandmother can be handled privately! We can share the inheritance! We can give you a full quarter share of the farm proceeds!"
"It isn't yours to share, Eleanor," I replied coldly. "Grandma placed the entire estate—the house, the farmland, the original investment accounts, and every piece of jewelry in that velvet box—into an Irrevocable Living Trust three days before she died."
Maya sneered, clutching the diamond bracelet tighter against her wrist. "You're lying! She was senile! She couldn't sign anything!"
"She was entirely lucid, Maya," I said, pulling a laminated document from my bag and placing it on the table. "Here is the neurological evaluation signed by her chief physician the morning the trust was executed. Along with the video recording of her signing the final deed, witnessed by two independent officers of the court."
My father grabbed the paper, his eyes scanning the lines wildly. His breath became shallow, heavy, and ragged.
"And who is the sole trustee of the estate, you ask?" I continued, standing up from my chair. "Me. The will you had read today was legally invalidated the moment Grandma transferred her assets out of her personal name and into the trust."
"You... you traitor!" Maya screamed, standing up and pointing a manicured finger at my face. "You manipulated her! You sat by her bed for six months just so you could steal our money!"
"I sat by her bed for six months because I loved her," I said, my voice cutting through her screeching like an iron blade. "You didn't visit once because you thought she had nothing left to give you. But as it turns out, she gave me exactly what I needed to destroy you."
I grabbed the cedar music box, tucked it safely under my arm, and zipped my bag.

"I’ve already filed a Lis Pendens on the house," I added as I walked toward the doorway. "If any of you set foot on the property after midnight tonight, the police will arrest you for felony trespass. Have a wonderful evening."
I walked out of the restaurant, leaving the three of them screaming at each other in the ruined silence of their celebration.
