Chapter 10 - The Music Box Plays

That evening, as the sun dipped below the western hills, painting the sky in vibrant shades of violet and crimson, I sat alone in Grandma’s old study.

The room was filled with the warm scent of polished mahogany, old books, and fresh lavender. Where the heavy gold-framed family portrait had once hung above the fireplace, a new framed photograph now sat.

It was a simple, candid picture taken eight years ago: Grandma sitting on this very porch swing, her eyes crinkling with genuine warmth as she laughed, holding my hand while we watched the sunset together.

There were no expensive suits. There were no fake smiles. There was only real, unshakeable love.

I reached out and picked up the cedar music box from the desk.

I ran my fingers over the hand-carved mahogany roses, feeling the cool brass key on the back. I turned the key three times, hearing the gentle tension build within the spring mechanism, and set it down in the center of the desk.

The lid lifted slowly.

The delicate, crystal-clear notes of Claire de Lune echoed softly through the quiet house, drifting out through the open windows and into the warm night air over the fields she had worked so hard to save.

I leaned back in Grandma’s leather armchair, closed my eyes, and let out a long, peaceful breath.

They thought they had left me with nothing but an old toy. But in the end, my grandmother had given me the greatest inheritance of all: justice, peace, and a legacy that would live on long after the noise of their greed had vanished into silence forever.
