Chapter 7 - The Fracturing Clan

By mid-afternoon, the family dominoes were falling faster than any of them could stop.
In the mahogany-paneled living room of my parents' suburban home, chaos had erupted. My mother was frantically throwing expensive designer shoes and clothing into leather suitcases while my father sat at the kitchen counter, staring blankly at a row of official federal seizure notices stuck to his front window.
"I told you!" Eleanor screamed at my father, tossing a fur coat onto the couch. "I told you Chloe was watching us! I told you not to touch the trust accounts until the probate period ended!"
"Shut up, Eleanor!" my father roared, slamming his fist onto the counter. "You were the one who demanded sixty thousand dollars for your gallery rent! You were the one who forged her signature on the valley property mortgage!"
"Because you were broke!" Eleanor yelled back, her eyes wild with terror. "You lost three million in bad real estate shorts, Richard! You used my boutique as a tax shelter!"
The front doorbell rang—a sharp, persistent chime that sounded like a death knell.
Eleanor froze. My father slowly turned his head toward the hallway.
Through the frosted glass of the front door, the dark silhouettes of three federal agents wearing navy windbreakers with gold lettering were clearly visible.
My mother dropped her suitcase. She didn't hesitate for a single second. She grabbed her handbag, sprinted toward the back kitchen door, unlocked it, and fled through the backyard toward her car parked in the rear alleyway.
My father walked to the front door with heavy, defeated steps and pulled it open.
"Richard Miller?" the lead federal agent asked, holding up a federal arrest warrant.
My father didn't answer. He simply held out his wrists, his face completely hollowed out, as the agents stepped inside and placed him under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and tax evasion.
Across town, Eleanor’s high-speed escape lasted less than twelve minutes.

As she pulled her Mercedes out of the alleyway, two unmarked police cruisers boxed her vehicle in at the intersection. She was pulled from the driver's seat in full view of three news crews who had been alerted to the massive federal sweep.
By 5:00 PM, all three members of my family—my father, my mother, and my sister—were sitting in separate interrogation rooms at the downtown federal holding facility, unable to post bail due to the complete freeze on their stolen assets.
