Chapter 2 - The Tactical Withdrawal

Within the hour, the house was a flurry of movement. My father didn't pack my clothes; he packed my life. He moved with the efficiency of a man who had spent thirty years mobilizing units. He didn't allow Grant to speak to me, positioning himself like a physical barrier between my husband and the bed.

"Claire, don't listen to him," Grant shouted from the doorway, his bravado slipping into a desperate, frantic edge. "If you leave, you’re breaking our marriage! You’re hurting the baby!"

I didn't answer him. I couldn't. I was focused on the suitcase, on the feeling of my father’s hand resting gently on my shoulder. It was the first time in six months I hadn't felt watched, hadn't felt the pressure of Grant’s hand on my arm, or the crushing weight of Evelyn’s constant surveillance.

As we reached the front door, the Colonel stopped and turned. He looked at them—Grant, with his expensive suit and his hollow, panicked eyes; Evelyn, with her mouth slightly open, already calculating how to spin this story to the neighbors.

"There will be a process server here by morning," my father said to the room at large. "And if either of you comes within a hundred yards of my daughter, I will ensure that your private lives become public record in ways that will make your current predicament look like a vacation."

We stepped out into the night. The air was cool, smelling of jasmine and freedom. I climbed into his SUV, and as he started the engine, I saw Grant standing in the doorway—a man who had just realized that the "weak" girl he had been abusing had been rescued by a force he could never hope to understand.
