Chapter 3 - The Cold War

The first three days in my father's home were a blur of doctors, lawyers, and quiet, agonizing recovery. My bruises began to fade, turning from angry shades of violet to dull, fading yellow. My father was a man of few words, but every action was a calculated strike.

He sat in the living room with a legal pad, his fountain pen scratching against the paper. He wasn't just planning a divorce; he was conducting an audit of Grant’s life. He found out that Grant’s firm was a shell—a front for a series of bad investments that had drained his own parents' retirement funds.

"They were trying to use you to bridge their financial ruin," Dad said, not looking up from his notes. "They thought if they could force you to sign the house over to them, they could leverage it for a loan. They weren't just abusing you, Claire; they were trying to harvest your future to save their own vanity."

I sat in the corner, staring at the window. The ghost of Grant’s voice—no one will believe you, you’re crazy—still echoed in the back of my mind.

"He’s going to come back, isn't he?" I asked.

My father looked up then. His eyes were cold, sharp, and entirely unflinching. "Let him try. I spent thirty years preparing for threats more dangerous than a man like Grant. He has no idea who he is dealing with."

He stood up and walked to the window, watching the driveway. He was waiting. And I knew that when Grant finally moved, my father would be ready to dismantle him piece by piece.
