Chapter 6 - The Walls Close In

The sixth day brought the first crack in their resolve. I received a video call—a blocked number. I answered, and Grant’s face filled the screen. He looked haggard, his eyes bloodshot, his composure completely shredded.

"Claire, you need to stop this," he rasped. "The bank called. The office called. They’re saying there’s a federal inquiry. You don't know what you're doing. Tell your father to back off!"

"My father is doing exactly what you forced him to do," I said, my voice steady. I didn't feel fear. I felt a cold, sharp triumph. "You spent six months telling everyone I was crazy, Grant. You made sure everyone thought I was broken. Now, the truth is coming out, and you’re the one who looks unstable."

Evelyn’s voice drifted in from the background, shrill and panicked. "Tell her to drop the charges, Grant! We can offer her the house, just get her to call the D.A.!"

"It’s not for sale," I told them. "And it never was yours. The trust is being liquidated, and the house is being sold to cover the debt you two incurred in my name."

I hung up.

I walked out to the porch, where my father was cleaning his boots. He looked up, his face softening only slightly. "They’re panicking," he noted, his voice flat.

"They have no leverage left," I replied.

"They never did," Dad said. "They only had the illusion of it. Once you strip away the lie, the abuser is just a man in a room, waiting for the consequences to find him."

The walls were closing in on them, and for the first time since my mother passed, I felt like I was finally breathing the open air. The final battle was approaching, and I knew—without a shadow of a doubt—that we had already won.
