Chapter 2 - The Fallout

The weeks that followed were a blur of unsolicited emails, handwritten letters shoved into our mailbox, and surprise visits from family members acting as emissaries for my father. He wasn't apologizing. He was waiting for me to crawl back, to admit that his definition of "real" family—steeped in old-world prejudices and biological gatekeeping—was the law of our lineage.
I didn't play along. I began an intensive investigation into my father’s "real" legacy. I discovered that the wealth he wielded as a weapon was built on a series of unethical business dealings that had hurt dozens of people over the last thirty years. The "grandkid" he had been waiting for—the son of his favorite, arrogant cousin—wasn't the golden boy he promised. He was a liability.
The drama escalated when my father attempted to use his influence to threaten my job. He underestimated the person he had raised. He had taught me to be ruthless, but he had failed to teach me that the strongest person in the room is the one who has nothing left to lose.
