Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

The final audit of the inheritance was a day of catharsis. I sat in a lawyer’s office, the same one my mother had used decades ago. The lead attorney placed a heavy leather-bound folder on the desk.

"Everything has been recovered, Miss," he said, his voice brimming with a professional respect that felt foreign yet deserved. "The real estate, the liquid assets, the intellectual property of the firm—it’s all legally yours. Your father has no claim, no equity, and no future in the business."

I looked at the documents. They represented the life my mother had intended for me, a life they had spent years trying to cannibalize. I wasn't just wealthy; I was protected. I decided right then to rebrand the company, to strip away the name that had become synonymous with my father’s arrogance and replace it with a name that honored my mother’s legacy.

I signed the papers. My hand was steady. As the ink hit the paper, I felt the final, phantom stinging on my cheek from the slap fade away. It was no longer a wound; it was just a memory of a girl who had once been a victim, who had now grown into the woman who held the pen.
