Chapter 4 - The Mother-in-Law’s Reality Check

The doorbell rang at 4:30 PM.

I was in the middle of sterilizing bottles when the loud, rhythmic pounding started. It wasn't the polite knock of a neighbor or a delivery driver. It was the frantic, entitled hammering of someone who believed the rules of society simply did not apply to them.

I checked the ring camera on my phone. Linda Collins, my mother-in-law, stood on the porch. Her designer sunglasses were pushed up into her perfectly styled blonde hair, her face flushed with righteous fury, clutching a leather handbag like a weapon.

I took a deep breath, walked to the front door, and unlatched the deadbolt. I didn't open it all the way; I kept the security chain firmly in place, leaving a four-inch gap.

Linda glared through the opening. "Clara! Open this door right this instant! Do you have any idea what kind of mess you’ve caused?!"

"Hello, Linda," I said, my voice eerily calm compared to her screeching tone. "What are you doing here?"

"My son called me from Mexico twenty minutes ago—he had to borrow a stranger’s phone because you heartless little monster deactivated his entire life!" Linda shrieked, pressing her face against the crack in the door. "He is stranded at a resort! He hasn't eaten a proper meal in twelve hours because his cards are blocked! How dare you treat my son this way?!"

"Your son abandoned his wife and three newborn children to go drink tequila in Cabo," I reminded her, my tone dropping an octave. "Did he mention that part when he called you crying?"

"He was burnt out!" Linda defended instantly, waving a manicured hand dismissively. "Ethan carries the financial weight of this entire family! He works sixty hours a week! He deserved a little break to clear his head, and you threw a hysterical tantrum like a common brat!"

"A break," I repeated, letting out a sharp, cold laugh. "Linda, I had major abdominal surgery six weeks ago. I sleep forty minutes a night. I am feeding three babies simultaneously while changing twenty-four diapers a day. Ethan packed a bag, kissed my cheek, and walked out the door to catch a flight to paradise. That isn't a 'break.' That is desertion."

Linda crossed her arms, her expression hardening into pure venom. "You chose to have those children. You wanted a big family. Ethan told me you pressured him into it! Now that you have them, you expect him to suffer right alongside you? That’s not how a partnership works, Clara. You’re punishing him out of pure, jealous spite because you’re stuck at home in sweatpants while he succeeds."

Before I could answer, a loud, collective wail erupted from the nursery down the hall. Maya, Noah, and Leo had synchronized their crying schedules—a chorus of hunger and exhaustion that filled the hallway.

I looked straight into Linda’s eyes through the narrow gap in the door.

"If Ethan wants to succeed so badly," I said softly, "he can do it from the airport lobby when he gets back. Because as of today, his cards are frozen, his job is under administrative review, and he is legally barred from entering this house without my permission."

Linda’s jaw dropped. "You... you locked him out of his own home?!"

"It’s my home too, Linda. And right now, it’s a sanctuary for the people he ran away from."

I didn't wait for her reply. I slid the security chain home with a heavy, metallic click and turned away from the door, leaving my mother-in-law screaming curses into the wood.
