Chapter 8 - The Preliminary Hearing

The preliminary custody and asset division hearing took place three weeks later in a packed courtroom downtown.

The air in the room smelled of old paper, floor wax, and high-stakes tension. Ethan sat at the defense table beside a high-priced attorney his parents had somehow managed to retain by liquidating their secondary car collection. Ethan looked gaunt, his skin pale, his corporate swagger entirely replaced by a nervous, twitchy posture.

I sat at the plaintiff’s table beside Sarah Vance, calm, composed, and wearing a sharp charcoal blazer. In the infant car seats resting quietly beside our table, Maya, Noah, and Leo slept peacefully, monitored by a trusted nanny my mother had hired for the day.

Judge Henderson, a stern-faced woman with decades of family court experience, adjusted her glasses and looked down through her bifocals at the towering stacks of exhibits submitted by Sarah’s firm.

"Mr. Collins," Judge Henderson began, her voice cutting through the quiet courtroom like a scalpel. "I have reviewed the petitioner’s filings. I have seen the text messages where you casually announced a two-week solo vacation to Mexico while your wife was six weeks postpartum recovering from major abdominal surgery. I have seen the financial statements showing you utilized shared funds for your personal leisure while refusing to hire domestic help. And I have seen the police reports regarding your recent arrest for violating a stay-away order."

Ethan’s attorney leaned over, whispering frantically in his ear, trying to prep him.

"Your Honor," Ethan stammered, standing up nervously. "If I may speak—my wife is exaggerating! Postpartum emotions run very high! I was under immense corporate pressure, and I simply needed a brief mental reset so I could return to work as a better provider! Any father would need—"

"A better provider?" Judge Henderson interrupted, her voice dripping with absolute contempt. "Mr. Collins, a provider does not abandon three newborns to the sole care of a recovering medical patient while he drinks cocktails by a resort pool. A provider does not commit financial dissipation to fund his own escape from reality."

She picked up her wooden gavel and let it fall with a sharp, echoing crack.

"The court hereby grants the petitioner, Clara Collins, full primary physical and legal custody of the minor children. Temporary visitation for the respondent is denied pending mandatory psychological evaluation and anger management classes. Furthermore, the emergency financial injunction is made permanent: all marital assets, including Mr. Collins's remaining severance from Vanguard Logistics, are frozen and awarded to the petitioner as retroactive child support and marital compensation."

Ethan collapsed back into his chair, burying his face in his hands as his lawyer frantically shuffled papers.

Sarah turned to me, offering a quiet, triumphant nod.

It was over. The legal battle wasn't entirely finished, but the foundation of my new life had just been poured in concrete.
