Chapter 10 - A Brand-New Dawn

Six months after the rainy morning Ethan stood locked out on our front porch, the world outside my windows looked completely different.
It was mid-autumn in Portland. The maple trees lining our street were burning with brilliant shades of amber and gold, and the crisp morning air carried the comforting scent of woodsmoke and damp earth.
I stood on the back deck of our house holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching the golden sunlight spill across the manicured lawn.
Inside the living room, a soft chorus of happy coos and giggles drifted through the open sliding glass door. Maya, Noah, and Leo were six months old now—sitting up on their play mats, chubby-cheeked, bright-eyed, and thriving.
My mother was inside playing peek-a-boo with Leo, her laughter mingling with the babies' sweet sounds.
My life wasn't easy. Raising triplets alone was still an exercise in military-grade organization, endless patience, and sheer physical endurance. There were days when I was tired down to my bones, when the coffee went cold before I could drink it, and when the mountain of laundry seemed entirely insurmountable.
But I wasn't carrying the dead weight of a selfish, resentful partner anymore. I wasn't begging someone who claimed to love me to see my exhaustion or share my burden.
My phone buzzed gently on the wooden patio table beside my coffee mug.
I glanced down at the screen. It was an email notification from the bank confirming that the transfer of title for the house and the final disbursement of the marital asset settlement had been successfully processed. My name was the only signature on the deed.
I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen, and scrolled past my old photo gallery—past the old pictures of Ethan smiling arrogantly at restaurants we could barely afford, pretending to be a family man for the sake of social media.
I deleted the last of them, clearing the digital clutter once and for all.

Inside the house, Maya let out a loud, joyful squeal as she finally managed to grab a plush yellow duck.
I took a deep sip of my warm coffee, smiled out at the golden autumn morning, and stepped back inside to join my real family.
