Chapter 2 - The Sound of Betrayal

The fog in my brain began to lift, replaced by a crystalline, jagged clarity. I needed to move, but my muscles felt like lead. I crawled to the bathroom, splashing ice-cold water onto my face until the dizziness subsided. As I looked in the mirror, I didn't see the broken woman Julian had left behind; I saw a ghost who had returned to haunt the living.

I knew I couldn't reach the gala physically—I was still too weak, and the drive would take forty minutes. Instead, I accessed my hidden terminal. My son, Leo, was there. He was only nineteen, the product of a marriage I had desperately tried to keep stable for his sake. Watching him on the live stream, I saw him standing near the stage. He looked uncomfortable, his eyes darting around the room, avoiding his father’s gaze.

Julian leaned down, whispering something into the mistress’s ear—a woman named Elena, a junior partner at his firm whom I had mistakenly mentored. Elena giggled, touching the sapphire bracelet on her wrist with a sickening sense of ownership.

My phone pinged. A text from Julian: “Sleep well, my love. You needed the rest. The gala is a success. I’ll be home late.”

The audacity was blinding. I didn't reply. Instead, I logged into the gala’s internal security feed. I watched as Leo moved toward the sound booth. My heart stopped. What was he doing? He caught the eye of the sound engineer, handed him a small tablet, and climbed the stairs to the stage.

The room went silent as Leo took the microphone. He looked at his father, his face devoid of the warmth he usually reserved for family. He didn't look like a son addressing a proud parent; he looked like a juror delivering a verdict.

"My father has always taught me that everything has a price," Leo’s voice boomed through the speakers, steady and cold. "He taught me that if you want something—a position, a reputation, a life—you take it. And tonight, he’s taken everything he could."

Julian’s smile faltered. Elena stiffened.

Leo leaned into the mic, his eyes locking onto his father’s. "You’ve spent years building a facade of integrity, Dad. But the foundation is rotten. You’ve replaced the truth with a placeholder. Now, you can support that 'support' yourself."

He dropped the microphone. The thud echoed like a gunshot.
