Chapter 2 - The Exile

The courtroom-like atmosphere of the cathedral dissolved into chaos. As the screen displayed the damning evidence of Genevieve’s financial embezzlement—a series of wire transfers to a high-stakes gambling syndicate in Macau—the "mourners" began to retreat. They weren't there to offer condolences; they were there to see what they could inherit. Now, they were merely witnesses to the fall of the Thornecroft matriarch.

Genevieve remained on the floor, her face a mask of shattered hubris. Clara, meanwhile, was frantically tapping on her phone, likely trying to liquidate her own hidden accounts.

Arthur Thornecroft stepped up to me, his expression softening from legal stoicism to genuine concern. "Isabelle, you need to leave. Now. The press will be here in minutes, and the vultures in the pews will try to leverage whatever they can."

"I have nowhere to go," I whispered, my hand instinctively cradling my bump. "She owns the estate, the apartment in the city, the house in the Hamptons..."

"She owns the property deeds, yes," Thornecroft said, pulling a heavy brass key from his coat pocket. "But Julian accounted for that. He bought a property in the remote hills of Sonoma three months ago. It is held under a shell corporation that doesn't exist on any public registry. It is safe, it is stocked, and it is yours."

As we made our escape through the sacristy, I looked back once. Genevieve was being hoisted up by her assistants, her eyes meeting mine. There was no apology there, only a vow of vengeance.

The drive to Sonoma was a blur. The house was a glass-and-stone sanctuary overlooking a valley of ancient oaks. It was beautiful, but it felt like a tomb. That night, unable to sleep, I retreated to the study. I found a leather-bound journal sitting on the desk, embossed with the Thornecroft seal.

Inside were not just financial instructions, but codes. Rows of numbers, GPS coordinates, and names of Julian’s associates I had never met. It was a roadmap to a conspiracy, and by the time dawn broke, I realized the horrifying truth: Julian hadn't died in a simple accident. He had been uncovering a human trafficking ring that linked the city’s highest officials to my mother-in-law.
