Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Phase

Three days passed in a haze of bandages and legal preparation. From the security cameras I had secretly installed in our foyer—a precaution I had taken after the first time he’d "accidentally" broke a phone near my head—I watched them.

Daniel was pacing the living room, his phone glued to his ear. He was painting a narrative, calling our friends, his voice strained and frantic. "She’s had a breakdown," I heard him tell a mutual acquaintance. "The pressure of the inheritance... she’s become paranoid. She left in the middle of the night, taking the accounts with her. I’m just trying to protect her from herself."

Vanessa was pacing behind him, her face twisted in a mask of calculated fury. "She’s a liar, Daniel! She’s playing the victim to get the police involved. If she thinks she can cut me out, she’s got another thing coming."

I watched them from the hotel room, sipping water. They were performing for an audience that wasn't there, trying to rewrite the script before the curtain even rose. They didn't know that the police were already reviewing the statements, or that the "modest inheritance" they thought I held was actually a legal net designed to snap shut the moment they tried to access it.

On the fourth day, I received a notification. Daniel had attempted to access the offshore account attached to the lending firm. The system had rejected him, locking the account and triggering an automatic alert to the fraud department.

He didn't know I was watching. He didn't know I was now the one holding the leash. He thought he was losing a wife; he was about to lose everything he had ever stolen. I picked up my phone and texted Miriam.

The time for playing the timid designer was over. The time for the audit had begun.
