Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The silence from my side was the ultimate weapon. Daniel, accustomed to my predictable oscillations between guilt and submissiveness, was unravelling. Through the live feed of the security cameras, I watched the domestic landscape of our home turn into a pressure cooker.

Vanessa’s beauty studio was a pipe dream built on the promise of my inheritance. Without that forty-thousand-dollar deposit, the contractors had stopped showing up, and the lease on the prime downtown storefront was about to be voided. She was no longer lounging; she was screaming.

"She has the money locked, Daniel! Do something!" Vanessa’s voice crackled through the monitor.

"I am doing something!" Daniel roared back, slamming a glass against the granite island. "I’ve called the banks, I’ve called the lawyers. They keep telling me there’s a 'temporary freeze due to audit'—an audit I didn't authorize!"

I watched them pace, their faces flushing with the realization that their lifestyle—one sustained by the steady drip of my father’s legacy—was evaporating. The irony was exquisite. They had spent years mocking my "modesty," calling me boring because I didn't spend my dividends on fast cars or luxury labels. Now, they were drowning in a pool they had assumed was bottomless, only to find the drain had been pulled by the person they considered the least capable of harm.

Vanessa threw a stack of brochures for the studio into the fireplace. I watched the gloss ignite. For the first time, I felt a flicker of genuine pity, not for them, but for the version of myself who used to wake up early to cook them breakfast. That woman was gone.
