Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Begins to Fall

At 9:00 AM on Christmas morning, Evan walked down the grand staircase wearing a cashmere robe, holding a cup of freshly brewed Ethiopian coffee. The smell of roasted turkey and rosemary filled the air as his mother, Sylvia, bustled about the kitchen humming a holiday tune.
“Merry Christmas, my shining star!” Sylvia beamed, walking over to kiss Evan’s cheek. “Oh, doesn’t this house feel so much lighter today? No crying children, no lingering peasant smells. Just pure elegance.”
“It feels like success, Mom,” Evan smiled, taking a sip of his coffee. “Where’s Bianca?”
“Still upstairs freshening up. She wants everything to be perfect when the photographer arrives for our holiday spread in Twin Cities Luxury Magazine.”
Evan chuckled, walking over to the marble kitchen island to check his smartphone. He had scheduled a preliminary balance transfer notification from his primary business account to clear the remaining payment on his new waterfront cabin in Lake Minnetonka.
He tapped his banking app.
Access Denied. Account Frozen.
Evan frowned. He tapped his screen again, refreshing the app.
Error Code 404: Institutional Asset Lock Initiated by Primary Trust Administrator.
“What the hell?” Evan muttered under his breath, a sudden knot tightening in his stomach.
He opened his corporate banking dashboard—the portal for his tech firm, Ward Innovations. Every single account balance flashed a harsh, glaring red zero. The primary corporate treasury had been drained, rerouted, and sequestered into an unidentifiable holding account under a restricted federal routing number.
“Mom,” Evan said, his voice rising in sudden panic. “Give me your phone. Let me check my personal credit card.”
Sylvia paused, holding a silver platter. “Why? Is something wrong with the online banking?”
“Just give me the phone!” Evan snatched the device from her hand, frantically dialing his personal concierge card number.
The automated voice on the other end of the line was chillingly polite: “We’re sorry. This card has been permanently suspended due to an administrative ownership transfer under master deed reference Ellis-Ward 2021-X.”
May you like
“Ellis-Ward?” Evan breathed, the coffee cup slipping from his hand and shattering against the marble floor, dark liquid splashing across his bare feet. “No. That’s impossible.”
Before Sylvia could demand an explanation, the front doorbell chimed—a loud, resonant gong that echoed through the silent mansion.
