Chapter 7 - The Corporate Disassembly

By the first week of January, the legal storm had reached hurricane force across the Twin Cities business community.
The board of directors at Ward Innovations held an emergency closed-door meeting at a downtown high-rise. Evan sat at the far end of the boardroom table, looking haggard, unshaven, and defeated in a wrinkled suit.
The chairman of the board—a longtime venture partner appointed by Arthur’s blind trust—slapped a thick file onto the center of the mahogany table.
“Mr. Ward,” the chairman announced coldly. “Following the forensic financial audit conducted over the holidays, this board has discovered systemic asset concealment, fraudulent expense reporting, and illegal fund diversion totaling over three million dollars.”
Evan leaned forward, his voice desperate. “That’s my R&D capital! I have the authority to—!”
“You have zero authority,” the chairman interrupted. “By unanimous vote of the majority shareholders—represented entirely by the Ellis-Ward Primary Trust—you are hereby stripped of your CEO title, your executive voting rights, and your seat on this board, effective immediately.”
“You can’t do this!” Evan screamed, slamming his hands onto the table. “I founded this company! I built it!”
“You incorporated it on paper using seed money that legally belonged to Colonel Arthur Ellis,” the chairman replied evenly, sliding a single paper toward him. “Sign the voluntary resignation, Mr. Ward. If you refuse, the federal indictments for corporate fraud will be filed before the close of business today.”
Evan stared at the document. The pen felt like lead in his trembling fingers.
With a hollow, defeated sigh, he scrawled his name across the signature line.

In less than three weeks, Evan Ward had gone from a self-proclaimed billionaire reigning over high society to a broke, unemployed pariah facing potential criminal investigation, living out of an extended-stay motel on the industrial outskirts of Minneapolis.
His mother, Sylvia, had retreated to a cramped apartment in Florida, humiliated by her former country club friends. Bianca had already blocked his number, having moved on to a new, wealthier target before the ink on Evan’s eviction notice had even dried.
