Chapter 5 - Brooke’s Desperate Betrayal

By Friday evening, the financial freeze ordered by Judge Harrison had taken full effect.
Julian’s credit cards were declined at every turn. His corporate accounts at Apex Logistics were placed under administrative lock pending an internal audit triggered by my forensic report, and his sleek luxury sedan was repossessed from the driveway of his downtown townhouse due to missed lease payments that had been masked by shell company transfers.
Sitting in my cozy North Side apartment—a small, two-bedroom space I had rented in secret months ago using funds from my pre-marital savings account—I poured a cup of tea while Maya slept peacefully in her room.
My phone chimed with an incoming video call from an unlisted number.
I answered it, setting the phone on the kitchen counter.
Brooke Sterling’s face appeared on the screen. She was sitting in the back of a taxi, her mascara smeared, looking utterly disheveled and terrified.
"Hannah," Brooke gasped, her voice trembling violently. "Please... don't hang up. You have to listen to me."
"You have five seconds, Brooke," I said calmly, taking a sip of tea. "Before I forward this call log to the State's Attorney."
"It was Julian!" Brooke cried out, pressing her face closer to the camera. "It was all Julian and his mother! They told me you were insane! They told me you were abusive to Maya and that the money they were transferring into my account was just Julian's private family inheritance! I didn't know it was stolen from your family accounts!"
I let out a soft, dry laugh. "Brooke, you were recorded on camera telling a six-year-old child that her mother would be sent to an asylum if she didn't lie to a judge. You wore my diamond bracelet to court."
"Julian gave me that bracelet!" Brooke wept. "He told me he bought it at an auction! Hannah... please. My father's law license is being revoked by the bar association. The federal prosecutors are threatening me with five years in prison for money laundering! I'll tell them everything! I'll give them Julian's private phone logs, his hidden hard drives... everything!"
I watched her spiral, feeling no anger, no satisfaction—only a cold, absolute sense of justice.
"Brooke," I said softly. "You wanted my husband. You wanted my life, my home, and my daughter's future. Now you have to deal with the consequences of helping him try to take them."
"Hannah, please—"
"If you have evidence regarding Julian's offshore accounts," I interrupted, "deliver it directly to the State's Attorney's office tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. If you cooperate fully, maybe the judge will give you probation instead of state prison. Goodnight, Brooke."
May you like
I ended the call, blocked the number, and leaned back against the counter.
The dominoes were falling faster than even I had anticipated. Julian’s fake world wasn't just crumbling—it was completely disintegrating.
