Chapter 7 - Julian’s Desperate Counter-Strike

Desperate men do desperate things.
At 2:00 p.m. that afternoon, while I was finishing an intake meeting with a prominent family law firm that had offered to represent me pro bono due to the high-profile nature of the case, my phone rang.
It was the security front desk at Maya’s private Montessori school.
"Mrs. Vance?" the administrative voice sounded hurried and anxious. "We have a situation here. Your husband, Mr. Julian Vance, just entered the main lobby. He is demanding to take Maya out of class immediately."
My heart dropped into my stomach like a lead weight.
"Do not let him near her!" I shouted, standing up so fast my chair rattled against the floor. "Judge Harrison issued an emergency order granting me sole legal custody on Thursday! The order was faxed to your office on Friday morning!"
"We have the order on file, Mrs. Vance," the administrator replied frantically. "Our security guard is holding him in the foyer, but he is extremely agitated, shouting that he has parental rights—"
"I am ten minutes away," I said, my voice hard as steel. "Call the police immediately!"
I sprinted out of the law office, hailing a taxi on Michigan Avenue. "Montessori Academy on Lincoln Park! Drive fast!"
Ten minutes felt like ten hours. My hands shook as I stared out the taxi window, images of Julian taking my daughter flashing through my mind. He knew the federal net was closing around him. He knew he was facing years in prison. And in his twisted, narcissistic mind, taking Maya was his last bargaining chip—his last way to hurt me.
When my taxi pulled up to the school, two Chicago Police squad cars were already parked in the circular driveway, their lights flashing blue and red against the autumn leaves.
I burst through the glass front doors.
In the lobby, Julian was pressed up against the brick wall, his arms pinned behind his back by two officers while a third handcuffed his wrists.
His hair was uncombed, his shirt wrinkled, his eyes wild and bloodshot.
"Hannah!" Julian screamed when he saw me enter, thrashing against the officers' grip. "Tell them! Tell them to let me go! She's my daughter! You can't keep her from me!"
I walked over to him slowly, stopping just out of his reach.
"You don't care about Maya, Julian," I said, my voice calm, cold, and clear. "You never did. You only cared about using her to break me."
"I made you!" Julian spat, dark venom dripping from every word. "You were nothing before me! Just a pathetic accountant sitting in a cubicle! I gave you a house! I gave you a life!"
"And you tried to steal my daughter," I replied softly. "That was your fatal mistake."
A federal agent from the IRS team stepped through the front doors, holding an official warrant.
"Julian Vance," the agent announced loudly. "You are under arrest by order of the United States District Court for federal wire fraud, money laundering, and corporate embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the officers hauled Julian out the glass doors toward the waiting squad car, he looked back over his shoulder, his eyes filled with defeat, panic, and the sudden, awful realization that he had lost everything.
I turned toward the inner hallway.
Maya was standing near her classroom door, holding her teacher's hand, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
I knelt down, opening my arms wide.
Maya let go of her teacher's hand and ran as fast as her small legs could carry her, crashing into my arms and burying her face in my shoulder.

"Is Daddy going away for a long time?" she whispered against my neck.
"Yes, baby," I murmured, kissing her cheek. "Daddy is going away. But we're safe now. I promise you, we are completely safe."
